Thailand Gripen Lastest Update
How the RTAF’s Gripen will be look like?
We have the initial answer here.

This photo is from the press conference in Bangkok after the contact signing ceremony in Sweden.
Photo by Fs.1 Rach Ratanawijarn of RTAF.
Also, on the press conference. ACM Chalit, Commander-In-Cheif of RTAF, said that the minister of defense of Swedish government already handed in the Security of Supply book that confirm the support and logistic for the entire time of service. Sweden also invites RTAF to join ‘Gripen User Group’ with the current Gripen customer.

IMO, The final 3 candidate could be MiG-35, F/A-18E/F, and Typhoon. ๐
 What is the point of keeping a well-known missile classified?
I also wonder too. Everyone know RTAF got Python-4. It’s just the photo.
BTW, wouldn’t it be cheaper for Thailand to join the Brazilian F-5BR program? The Brazilians plan to upgrade their F-5Es to fire South African A-Darter and possibly a new BVR missile South Africa may propose for joint development.
Cheers,
Sunho
It’s maybe cheaper but it’s not worthwhile. The life of airframe of F-5B/E is gonna end in several years. (The first F-5B of the world just decommission last year. 44 years in service ๐ฎ ) And if you put them into upgrade program you may extend the service life to about 10 or 15 years. But if we buy the new one we can use them for another 30 years or more.
And in the new one you got new technology also. ๐
PS. They upgraded a sqn. of F-5E/F to F-5T Tigres and RTAF will decommission them around 2018 – 2020. But those F-5s has less service hours than the about-to-decommission one. Some sources said that initially RTAF want to install new radar and Darby missile but the Asian economic crisis in 1997 leave them only DASH and Python-4 on F-5T Tigres. :diablo:
I wrote some info here. Sorry to reference my own page.

Hi Analayo,
Do you have any picture of the RTAF F-5E armed with Python IV?
I do have one picture that shows Python III, but not Python IV.I’d greatly appreciate if you could post some pictures here, if any.
Thanks in advance,
Sunho
Hi.
If I post such a photo I will surely arrest because the photo of Python-4 is highly classify. I still don’t know when they will release those photo.
Sorry, mate. ๐
I agree. Thai Gripen fanยดs camo looks much more interesting, but what happened to the national insignia?
๐ Oh. That photo is just the Thai fan concept that apply the current camo on F-5 to Gripen. Maybe he forget to include insignia. ๐ฎ It is base on this. (F-5E in 701 Sqn., the sqn. that Gripen will go to. You can see the insignia not far from the engine :diablo: )
Thank to all of you!!!
PS. Sorry the photo is too large.

I’m not sure that the S8000 is a worthwhile upgrade from the S5600. I’d put your money aside and save it until you can get something substantially better. It’s a relatively minor change as far as prosumer cameras go.
DSLRs prices are starting to come down, at long last. I’ll be sticking with my S6500fd for another season and I certainly wouldn’t “upgrade” that to the S8000 – which has the S5xxx’s type of electric zoom.
I support this idea. Currectly I uses S9600 and I am impress about it. But the only bad thing is the focus system. It’s very slow so it’s hard to catch the aerobatic flying. Luckily it’s a manual zoom. If S8000 got the electronic zoom, I do not recommend. ๐
I’d love to believe that they will be getting something else than the dull grey camo but somehow I don’t think so. Congratulations!
Thank. ๐
The original camo of F-5s in Wing7 are painted in lightblue and green camo.
Maybe you want something like this. (Design by Thai Gripen fan ๐ )

RTAF F8F Bearcat
This year, RTAF Children’s Day Air Show, which will be held on the second saterday of January every year, was held near the cargo area of the old Don Mueang International Airport. The special thing is that this place used to be the home of Wing 1 before they moved to Korat.
We welcome our old Bearcat to her fromer home today. ๐
That’s all. Thank for reading this thread.

RTAF F8F Bearcat
Tango Historical Squadron spended many years restoring this aircraft. With the help of the retired engineer in Northrop Gumman Company and Volunteer technician of Royal Thai Air Force and Royal Thai Navy. Bearcat can fly back to the sky.

RTAF F8F Bearcat
In serviced between 1951-1960, Bearcat is the most numerous fighter in the 95-years history of Royal Thai Air Force with 204 airframes in serviced nationwide. This aircraft is paint in the original scheme when she was commissioned in 12 Sqn. (today is 102 sqn.) of Wing 1.

T-28D. Royal Thai Air Force used T-28D in war on Communist. In Laos, T-28D were painted in Laos AF painting and flow in CAS mission. (in CIA secret war in Laos)
And later, RTAF recieved F-5A/B (the first F-5A/B of the production line are here in RTAF)
Can we called F-5A/B a “Fighter Bomber” ๐
Yes. This is the first contract of this project. This porject is covers 12 Gripen with 2 ERIEYEs,1 Saab 340 and RBS-15F. But due to the financial problem we split into 2 batch. The second batch wil be review when the new government come to office.
The intention of this project is to replace F-5B/E. and we got another sqn., F-5T Tigres. (Israeli-Upgraded of F-5E/F)
Since one sqn. of Royal Thai Air Force consists of 18 aircraft, The last F-5T Tigres will be retired in 10 years and we are short of 1 attack sqn., and if the Gripen can impress RTAF, in 2020 RTAF may fly 36 – 54 Gripen along with 2 F-16MLU sqn. and 1 F-16 ADF. And suppose we have a permission to buy F-35 in 2030 and F-16 were phase out then, 2 – 3 sqn. of Gripen will operate together with 3 sqn. of F-35.
Not to mention that Royal Thai Navy also have a plan to seek for A-7E replacement. It’s require 8 fighter. If the program is official start, RTN may become the first navy who operate Gripen. (RTN do not says they want only 2-engine jets)
Some detail that RTAF told the press are as follow.
– Gripen will be delivered within 36 months after the contact has been signed. (sign around Jan – Feb 2008) First 3 jets in Jan 2011 and another 3 on Mar 2011 and RTAF will declare the combat ready on Sep 2011.
– Saab 340 and ERIEYE will be delivered in 2010.
– Training will begin in 2008.
– Spare part will be delivered in 2010
– Master Degree scholarship will be handed to Thailand in 2009 to 2012
You can see the offer here

PS. Thailand bought 61 F-16s in 4 batch for total 20 years. ๐
๐ Ahh yes, Thank for your clarification.
Oh god, my English.
Oh yes, Finally (almost) we got the jet.
We, the military interesting group in Thailand, spend 4 years educating people how important to buy the new combat aircraft. Not to fight the other country but to save the pilot life that die from F-5 accident. ๐
Where is the pen hummmm? You need it now!!!! :diablo:
BTW, I think 3.8 billion Swedish Kronor is incorrect. It’s should be 3.8 billion Baht. (3.8 billion Kronor = 186,019 million Baht = 5,927 million USD!!!!!)
