Can someone enlighten me as to why the Dutch have been so keen to get rid of these, they are hardly ancient ? The Dutch cannot be short of cash with al that oil money pouring in at the moment so what is the reason ?

It seems there is a “general redefinition” of ALL branches of the Dutch Armed Forces in terms of equipment and missions (?)

I say this because lots of military equipment is being sold to allies.

For example, the Dutch navy got rid of all its fleet of P-3C Orions, selling 5 to Portugal and the rest (I think 6 )to Germany.

Also Portugal seems to be buying 37 Leopard 2 A6 Battle-Tanks from the Dutch Army, to replace its obsolete M-60s.

But perhaps some dutch colleague can shed more light on the subject?

    Rgds.

Is there any new information regarding this Purchase by the Portuguese Navy (PN)?

In the end of May 2006, the Portuguese Government Official News Bulletin published the order for the creation of an Official Portuguese Navy’s “technical team” to supervise the transfer of 2 M-Class Frigates to Portugal.

    …but after that…nothing…

Also I “heard” that there is some delay beucase the RNLN wants 1st to have the “new ships” ready and 100% personnel trained, so the deliveries to the PN would occur end of 2008 , middle of 2009…

But the Corvettes are already being built????I do not think so…

    Can anyone confirm this?

    I would greatly appreciatte.

    Thx

    Hi Wanshan,
are you sure of this or is just a “feeling”?

In Portugal the word is that the 1st ship will be tranferred middle-2008.

    What do you think?

    thanks.

I would say, a quick and dirty – and hence poor cut and paste and no edit – job! Shoddy journalism.

Left service november 2004 Hr. Ms. Abraham van der Hulst
Entered service 16 december 2005 Chilean navy (Almirante Blanco Encalada FF 15).

Left service 3 februari 2006 Hr. Ms. Tjerk Hiddes. Will enter service april 2007 Chilean navy (Almirante Riveros FF 18).

Both have their hangar and flight deck enlarged so as to be ablt to operate one Cougar heli each.

On 22 december 2005 agreement reached between Dutch and Belgian DoDs concerning sale of 2 M-fregatten. It concerns Hr.Ms. Karel Doorman and Hr.Ms. Willem van der Zaan. Expected delivery to Belgium in 2007 and 2008. In Belgian service the ships will be named Leopold I (F930) en Louise-Marie (F931).

Further 2 M frigates available for sale, going to Portugal, are Hr. Ms. van Amstel and Hr. Ms. van Nes.

well if there was “Shoddy journalism” sure it was not from my side, I simply made “print screen” of what was in both Sites.

It is not my fault that the MoD stated one thing and the Navy stated another, I placed the screens specially because of that.

But the Dutch MoD has corrected the incorrect info, so at least things got clarified.

It was also a surprise for both Belgians and Portuguese believe me http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/images/smilies/diablo.gif

Are you 100% certain that the 2 M for Portugal will be F831 and F833?

    wikipedia

    From wikipedia

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karel_Doorman_class_frigate

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karel_Doorman_class_frigate#Sales_to_Chilean.2C_Belgian_and_Portuguese_Navies

Sales to Chilean, Belgian and Portuguese Navies

In 2004 two ships, Tjerk Hiddes and Abraham van der Hulst were sold to Chile and renamed Almirante Riveros (FF18) and Blanco Encalada (FF15) respectively. Blanco Encalada commissioned into the Chilean Navy on 16. December 2005, with Almirante Riveros to be commissioned in April 2007.

On 20. July 2005, the Belgian government decided to buy two of the remaining six Dutch M-class frigates to replace the two remaining frigates of the Wielingen class (Wielingen and Westdiep) currently in service with the Belgian Navy, which in turn might be sold to Bulgaria. On 21. December 2005, Karel Doorman and Willem van der Zaan were sold to Belgium and renamed Leopold I (F930) and Louise-Marie (F931) respectively. They will be recommissioned between 2007- 2008.

In May 2006, Portugal’s Minister of National Defense, Luís Amado, showed interest in buying two Karel Doorman class frigates to replace the two remaining frigates of the João Belo class — instead of buying two frigates of the Oliver Hazard Perry class, offered by the United States. A committee of the Portuguese government arrived at the Netherlands to evaluate the condition of two frigates to be bought.

If the sale of two M-class frigates to Portugal pushes through, only two of the ships will remain with the Dutch Navy.

In the end of May 2006, the Portuguese Government Official News Bulletin published the order for the creation of an Official Portuguese Navy’s “technical team” to supervise the transfer of 2 M-Class Frigates to Portugal.

Although the official announcement has not yet been made, it seems the transfer will go ahead, and Portugal will drop the Oliver Hazard Perry offer.

I did some more investigation and I honestly do not think the purchase was made by Bulgaria, since it was indicated the price for both was US$ 296 million, and at least for 2005 , the budget for the Bulgarian Navy was of (only) US$ 56 million. 😎

Maybe there was some rush from the guys at the “Warships-IFR” :diablo:

    btw,
If the purchase from Portugal is confirmed, the 2 frigates should be transferred only at the end of 2007, so it leaves enough time to go to the Caribeean and come back… 😀

From the official Portuguese Navy Site

    http://www.marinha.pt

A very nice picture of the F-481 NRP Comandante Hermenegildo Capelo, sister ship of the João Belo and Sacadura Cabral.
The F-481 was decommisioned from the PN in April 2004.

    F481
