U.S. Chopper Goes Down in Iraq, 4 Passengers Injured
Thursday, April 05, 2007
BAGHDAD — A U.S. Army helicopter went down Thursday south of Baghdad, and all nine aboard survived, although four were wounded, the military said.
Gunmen opened fire on a Black Hawk helicopter at about 7:30 a.m. as it flew over Latifiyah, 20 miles south of Baghdad, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release the information.
The helicopter went down in a rural area and U.S. forces had cordoned off the site, the official said .
The militants apparently were using anti-aircraft heavy machine gun.
The last helicopter incident in Iraq occurred on March 1, when an OH-58 Kiowa helicopter made a “hard landing” in northern Iraq leaving the two crew members wounded. A week earlier, ground fire forced the downing of a Black Hawk north of Baghdad.

Two crew members rescued; military says hostile fire didn’t cause crash
Updated: 3:07 a.m. ET March 1, 2007
BAGHDAD, Iraq – An Army helicopter made a “hard landing” in northern Iraq and preliminary reports indicated a mechanical problem, the military said Thursday. The two crew members were rescued unharmed.
The U.S. Army OH-58 Kiowa helicopter, mostly used in surveillance and light attacks, came down south of Kirkuk, a military statement said.
“Preliminary reporting shows the cause of the hard landing was mechanical and not hostile fire,” it said.

A helicopter being developed for the Army rolled onto its side Wednesday after making an emergency landing on a golf course at a suburban Fort Worth country club.
The two pilots walked away from the wreck and were treated by medical personnel. No one on the ground was hurt, said Greg Hubbard, a spokesman for Fort Worth-based Bell Helicopter.
The armed reconnaissance helicopter, the fourth of its kind, was making its maiden flight when it lost power about 30 minutes into the trip, Hubbard said.
“When the landing skids hit the ground, they dug into the dirt and it made the helicopter roll,” he said.
The company will investigate the crash, Hubbard said.

It seem that the helicopter involved in the crash is no other than the ARH-70 / UH-70 Prototype on its first flight.

U.S. helicopter may have been shot down
BAGHDAD, Iraq – A U.S. helicopter that crashed Wednesday north of Baghdad was shot down, the military said after initially stating that the chopper made a “hard landing.” All aboard were safely evacuated by a second helicopter, said military spokesman Lt. Col. Christopher Garver.
“I can confirm that initial reports indicate that it was brought down by small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades,” Garver said, adding that the site had been secured.
The statement from Garver came hours after chief military spokesman Maj. Gen. William Caldwell told reporters that the Black Hawk had made a “hard landing.”
CNN first reported that the helicopter was shot down.
At least seven U.S. helicopters have crashed or been forced down by hostile fire since Jan. 20, killing 28 troops and civilians.

IRAQ: U.S. HELICOPTER DOWNED ON PATROL
Baghdad, 21 Feb. (AKI) – A US military helicopter crashed north of Baghdad on Wednesday and an insurgent group has claimed that it brought the aircraft down. The US military says that the Black Hawk helicopter made a “hard landing” and that its 9 crew and passengers has been rescued by an other chopper. Eyewitness reports carried by local and Arab media suggested the helicopter was struck by a missile near the city of Taji, 40 km from the capital and one insugent group has claimed responsibility for bringing down the aircraft. A US military spokesman says the cause of the “hard landing” was not yet clear.
In a statement posted to the Internet, the Mujahadeen Army said: “At 10 am today the mujahadeen of the Ibn Taimiya Brigade, which forms part of the Mujahadeen Army, succeeded in downing a Black Hawk helicopter of the crusader occupation forces in the area of Taji, north of Baghdad. We will give you further details of the operation. “
According to eyewitness reports the helicopter was one of two involved in patrols in a rural area close to the American base at Taji.

PARIS (Reuters) – French presidential candidate Segolene Royal has said she would rather invest more money in education than spend billions on a second aircraft carrier which could be developed jointly with Britain.
Socialist Royal, hoping to revive her campaign after several gaffes and reports of internal party divisions, told supporters she would use the savings to boost education spending if she wins the two-round election held in April and May.

Royal’s proposals earn applause and sneers
“If the nation is capable of freeing up money for a second aircraft carrier, I am pledging here that this … money, will not go to defence but education,” she said in a speech late on Thursday.
“I will keep the national defence effort unchanged … but I will not commit to the construction of a second aircraft carrier because I consider this effort should be made in the framework of the emergence of European defence,” she said.
France already has one carrier and is exploring the possibility of building a second in cooperation with Britain, which already has two aircraft carriers on the drawing board.
France and Britain agreed in principle last year to jointly construct three aircraft carriers, with France to pay 100 million pounds towards the design work.
Royal’s centre-right presidential rival Nicolas Sarkozy has said he would go ahead with a second carrier, as it would allow France to permanently keep one such vessel at sea.
Sarkozy, campaigning on the Indian Ocean island of La Reunion, a French overseas department, told reporters: “It’s her right but it still seems like a curious idea to tell the French: ’You’ll have to chose — either you educate your children or your assure their security.”
Far-right leader Jean-Marie Le Pen also said the second carrier was crucial. “A country like France cannot allow itself not to be defended,” Le Pen told France Info radio.
The La Tribune business daily recently reported France could drop plans for a second carrier as part of sweeping cuts to defence spending. Scrapping the carrier would save 2.9 billion euros (1.9 billion pounds), it said.
I think this report can be true but i think that the manpads used here are more Misagh 1 (Iranian copy and improved version of the chinese QW-1) than SA-7 the latest is lacking of an anti-flare system.
It’s also possible that Insurgents have received a batch of Misagh 2 (Iranian copy of QW-2) which mass production has started a few months ago.

sixth helicopter downing in Iraq
Officials report sixth helicopter downing in Iraq Thu Feb 8, 3:29 AM ET
BAGHDAD (Reuters) – A helicopter operated by a private security firm came down in Iraq last week, U.S. officials said on Thursday, an incident that marks the sixth downing of a helicopter in three weeks.
Reports of the January 31 incident, in which no one was killed, come a day after seven crew members and passengers aboard a U.S. Marine helicopter were killed when it crashed near Baghdad, possibly after being hit by ground fire.
The U.S. military, concerned that militants have changed tactics or are using more sophisticated weapons, has said it is adjusting its tactics.
One U.S. military official told Reuters he had heard reports that the private security helicopter came down under fire.
“It did not crash, it made a hard landing. They were able to get all crew and equipment out,” the official said.
The New York Times, quoting American officials, reported the helicopter was shot down south of Baghdad after insurgents attacked it with heavy-caliber ground fire.
An American helicopter swooped in to rescue the passengers and crew, it said. It was unclear how many people were on board.
U.S. embassy spokesman Lou Fintor told reporters the January 31 incident was under investigation.
US Military confirm loss of a fifth helicopter
BAGHDAD, Iraq – The U.S. military is confirming that a CH-46 sea knight helicopter went down northwest of Baghdad on Wednesday, while witnesses claimed the aircraft was shot out of the sky.
It is the fifth helicopter lost in just over two weeks, with the others believed downed by hostile fire, leading the top U.S. general to concede that insurgent ground fire has become more effective.
Witnesses said the helicopter had gone down in a field in the Sheik Amir area northwest of Baghdad, sending smoke rising from the scene, in a Sunni-dominated area between the Taji air base 12 miles north of Baghdad and Garma, 20 miles to the west of the capital.
“The helicopter was flying and passed over us, then we heard the firing of a missile,” said Mohammad al-Janabi, a farmer who was speaking less than a half-mile from the wreckage. “The helicopter, then, turned into a ball of fire. It flew in a circle twice, then it went down.”
