Posted this on the LEMB for Eric’s similar post there:
I can confirm that according to the 3-4th April entry in “Nachtjagd War Diaries” by Dr.T.Boiten [RedKite, 2008]:
This was Heinzelmann’s first claim…

Just to clarify, Clint does indeed have the markings correct, as does my source “Die Jagdfliegerverbande der Deutschen Luftwaffe 1934 bis 1945, Teil 4/I” by J.Prien et al [Struve, 2002]. I just failed to see it when posting… so off to Specsavers 😎

Surely somebody here with the appropriate volume of “Battle of Britain, Then and Now” can help? All I can add is that is that Braun was flying a Bf109E-4, WNr.2762 and coded sw 6+

Martin Baker MB5 or TSR2 for me…
🙁 Sad news indeed and from a personal perspective, I was lucky enough to be aircrew with this Cat in the early to mid-1990’s so had many a wonderful weekend at Dux working away on her… at least I have some footage of her and from my weekends away on display, she was much loved amongst the aviation community so its a shame that she’s met such an undignified end…

Appreciate the thought DCK… but I can’t make it anyway… I’ll have to see the photos and read the reports here 🙂

That’s very nice for you DCK… if you have space for a paying passenger, can you can make detour to EGKB and pick me up/drop me off? 😉

Perhaps with it being the Sabbeth, there should be an 11th Commandment we all tick and agree to when joining this forum?
11. Though shalt not slate Flying Legends :diablo:
Seriously though, I agree with the initial posters sentiment. I love Legends but certainly don’t go every year. I also agree that (serviceability and availability issues aside) a more detailed advance listing of participants would be useful, especially for those of us who need to make travel plans to get there in the first place (yes, I don’t drive)… and get home too…
EDIT: I also agree with some of the points put forward in the previous post from Peter (we posted at the same time) as I too was volunteer aircrew at Duxford during the early/mid 1990’s… so I can see both sides of the discussion…

Many thanks Andy… its good to see that interpretation of RAF markings is as much of a can of worms as those used by the Luftwaffe. My gut reaction is that this photo was taken before it went missing, but I’d love to be proved wrong…

Thanks again chaps…
Perhaps if somebody is able, they could be kind enough to ask Ray as to what state BR392 was in when it went “missing”?
Also, I have a supplementary question put by one of the members of the LEMB which is even further outside of my comfort zone. To quote Steve directly:
“That’s interesting, but it raises another question about this aircraft, if it is BR392. Starting in May 1942 RAF markings changed from the Type A and A1, as seen in the topic photo, to the Type C and C1 (with the thin white and yellow rings). If BR392 was lost in September ’42, then that seems to be a long five-month period where this Spitfire was improperly marked. Possible, no argument, but not likely.”
Any thoughts?

Many thanks indeed Mark… so this could indeed be a Beute/captured example, even if there is as much chance it could have been photographed before it went missing…
Thanks again 🙂

Many thanks for those Septic… I wanted to get up there today to pay my respects too, but my imminent move to Caterham-on-the-Hill has meant I’ve spent the day filling empty boxes…
