One from the archives… a Klemm Kl35 inverted and a tad on the low side too 😮

Thanks for the feedback chaps… the list was no doubt out of date the day I posted it on the LEMB back in May last year, so any continued feedback comments/updates always very much welcome… 🙂

Hi guys…
According to a caption for He177A-5, WNr.550043 on page 112 of “Heinkel He177 Greif” by J.R.Smith & E.J.Creek [Classic, 2008],
“…II./KG40 adopted an unusual camouflage scheme of pale blue grey (RLM76) with a broad pattern of dark grey (RLM74) oversprayed. On this aircraft, this scheme seems to have covered the whole of the fuselage, but the undersides of the wings, horizontal tail and engine nacelles remained pale blue (RLM65). This aircraft also had white spiral markings on its black spinners”
These image links to the Bundesarchiv photo archives show other examples of the Bordeaux-Merignac KG40 He177A-5’s:

@Richard – drop me a PM with your email address and I can send you a copy of the image without the red circle 🙂
@Andy – all I know at present is that the image was available on eBay at some stage in the past. We regularly discuss and debate all manner of Luftwaffe related images available via this medium and some of our members religiously save them and are then able to reproduce them for threads such as this. I’ll drop the post a PM via my board and see if he can help further…

Hi guys…
Here’s the image to which the previous poster makes reference, posted over on the LEMB by member Chris/Hurricane 🙂

[Source: expired eBay auction]
For the record, as I’ve previously stated earlier in this thread, I still agree that the artefact is a Do17 engine/starter access hatch… however, I’m still not convinced its the same hatch open on the photo above. This appears to be hinged along its long edge whilst the the surviving hatch is hinged along its short edge…
Reaches for his tin hat :dev2:

Many thanks for the detailed info Eric, I’ll update our thread on captured Vega Gulls to include your comments 🙂
Incidentally, are there any images of Vega Gulls in German/Luftwaffe service? Without wishing to hijack this thread, we have a second example listed:
Coded 5F+OK, DP+OI Used by Aufkl.Gr.(H)14 (later DP+OI, later D-IWSR) it went to Sweden in 1942 as SE-ALZ and crashed during Aug.45.

This is all we currently have over on the LEMB with regards this example:
Netherlands as PH-ATH, K65, X1085 it received the German code D-IXWD it was seized during 1941, it went to Sweden in 1942 as SE-ALA and is still flying today as G-AEZJ.
I’ll see if our membership can add anything else…

There is a diagram on this website showing the starter handle arrangement, it is possible the door you have is the small rectangle shown under the starter handle. Just a guess really but still a possibility.
I think that Paul may be onto something with this. I took the liberty to post the same question on the LEMB and the following drawing from Do217E-1 Bedinungsvorschrift-Fl has just been posted by Snautzer/Michiel. Note that the hinge on the actual hatch is in the same position, the approximate size appears to also match that on the hatch (No.2) visible on the drawing. I know its not a Do17Z, but the same hatch appears to be included on the Do17Z sub-type too:

The RLM 65 on the exterior of the actual hatch above also points to it being on the undersides too…

You just beat me to it Eric… Google earth had been fired up and both locations found. Seems the seller has got the dates wrong, unless there is an inscription on the back or one/all…
