Super photograph it is wonderful to be able to put faces to the names but so sad that three of the four lost their lives. Typhoon pilots must have had one of the highest rate of losses during the Normandy campaign.
Fantastic to be able to piece all of this together. Are the form 78 available at the National Archive? I’m planning my first visit there soon for some similar Typhoon queries (181/247 squadron).
In Francis Mason’s book it quotes: ‘JP843 No 197 Sqn., Tangmere, 9-43; ‘OV-Y’; flying escorts for Typhoon and medium bombers and, from 10-43, converted to the bombing role.
Hopefully someone who has access to the 198 and 609 ORBs/movement cards will be along soon.
Just read that it is planned to demolish the workshop hangar near the gate at Old Warden.
I don’t doubt that it is perhaps a little impractical as a workshop but it’s been there a very long time.
I can just about remember when there were just two hangars (and the Spitfire and Hurricane outside) and I would be saddened to see that one go.Roger Smith.
Honestly that would be seriously misguided to remove a piece of the history and fabric of Old Warden. Lets hope this isn’t part of the plan. Where did you read this?
Typhoon/Tempest throttle box?

Superb! Well done to all involved!
Really nice. Particularly like the Typhoon photo – I haven’t seen that before. Any idea of a date?
I agree, e.g. the music during Anna Walkers display at Legends was awful.
Brilliant collection of photographs and captions. What Mk spitfire are those with the very pointed wing tips?
Thanks Andy,
Was at Shuttleworth earlier today with my son & now am remembering that there was previously a more modern Demoiselle replica Brazilian owner?) which seems to have moved on. It will be interesting to see what the plans are for the Mag-Men example given your comments, and the work required ongoing with other projects.

Demoiselle, not Antoinette.
Yes, my mistake. Anyone know if this is flier?

More good news along the lines of new aircraft at Shuttleworth. Just reading in Prop-Swing earlier that the MagMen Antoinette replica has been acquired from Australia!
I assume this is destined to be a static exhibit, but fantastic news all the same.
Elwick.
Agree with Mike J. I’m not an insider, but a long time attendee at OW and SVAS member.
Poor weather can often restrict the programme at OW, and this was the main reason cited for the acquisition of the Wildcat.
From my perspective the collection appears on stronger ground now thanks to Tony Haig-Thomas leadership and focus on getting the finances and restaurant/shop facilities sorted out. I also feel that recent comments by his successor Sir John Allison, all sound a very positive note – the Mew Gull acquisition speaks to that.
I’d also applaud Sir John for confronting the elephant in the room which is the Spifire. 10 years for a major overhaul can only mean that the engineering side needs more support, and it seems hopeful that this will also be an area of focus.
for me the collection isin the best shape it has been for a long time.

Now there’s an idea…..how about a flying Beaufighter?
Plenty of Australians served on Beaufighter squadrons (RAF and RAAF) and Australia has at least one example that could be made airworthy with a lot less of an investment that that required to get another Lancaster into the air…
…nobody else has got an airworthy Beaufighter either!
Second that!
Really?
Don’t leave us in suspense like that – please tell……..
