I may be wrong but I did hear that the aircraft was actually privately owned and left on display at the airfield by permission of the Stn Comdr
That is what I thought, no idea who the owner is though. I did think that her days were numbered when a shiny Tornado GR1 with a thick coat of paint and a blacked out canopy appeared in our hangar at Marham a couple of years back, destined for only one place. But she has survived this far. The Fire section do give her an occasional wash, but only what can be reaches easily. I do still fear her days must be numbered though, such a shame with so few examples left of a type that was still in service less than 15 years ago!
If anyone has any photos of her being installed infront of SHQ, I’d love to see them! Must have been a logistical nightmare!
hope she’s got more fight left in her yet!!!!

I’d hazard a guess that the deciding factor was Money. I think that martin bakers system was only designed after the B1’s had gone into production, so to retro fit it would have been pretty pricey and the in service date would have slipped.
I may be wrong on all counts though……
Thanks for clearing that up, not fair is it? Specially as u see piccies of Davis Monthon and u see lines and lines of aircraft sat there 🙁
I was detached there a while back, here’s a couple of pics I took. The scale of the place was mind blowing. At the time they were converting some of the F4’s stored there to be unmanned targets.

At least those F4’s were serving a purpose.
Good thread this…
1. TSR2 (Would love to slam both engines into reheat and see what the girl could really do!)
2. Lancaster (Any mark, nothing quite like them IMHO!)
3. Sunderland (Imagine all the fun you could have scaring the life out of the boaters on the Norfolk Broads!)
4. B1B (Looks awesome!)
5. Lightning (Say no more)
Oh and a really big hangAr to keep them all in next to my own private Airfield. Be good to have a lake or the sea near by for the Sunderland too. RAF Coltishall should suffice………
I was looking at the site a few weeks ago and thinking the same thing Peter, surely someone must know the state of play?
Surely the Tug and the Wendy must be of use to someone?? Did the RAF just forget to pick them up when they locked the gates???
i hope it get’s preserved in this scheme she looks awsom:diablo: .

It’d be aweful if all the hard work getting her looking so good was wasted by hiding her away at Cosford and letting her be mauled by new trainees, she deserves to be in a museum for sure!
in the Early 80’s just before the Falklands, I went to work with my Dad was at Wittering at the time, on 1 Sqn I think. I watched in awe a Vulcan doing rollers.
It’s not only my first Aviation memory but also my first memory!
Magic.
Hello all
Hi folks. I’ve followed this thread with great interest over the last few weeks and thought I’d finally post. I’m a complete novice to the photography game, but have always seen great photo opportunities that I never manage to catch quite right. So following the untimely death of my trusty Sony Cybershot, I’m considering replacing it with a DSLR instead, to see if it’s the camera or my lack of talent ruining all my attempts at taking good photos!
Obviously if it transpires that’s it’s me letting the side down, any gear purchased can be sold on and I can go back to a standard digital camera and try and find another hobby!
With that in mind, I’ve been looking at the Canon EOS 400d and the Nikon D40x. I’ve never used either so am not biased towards a particular make. Both seem to be available for around the same price so I was wandering is there anything in particular that makes one slightly better than the other?
Here’s a photo I took with my trusty sony back in 2005. It’s in Canada in the middle of a storm we thought was going to end the world! I know the foreground isn’t focused properly and it’s not the best photo in the world! But it was taken with the camera in my hand in what felt like gale force winds! I was still proud of it, but from that moment on, I’ve always though I could of maybe done better with a better camera!

Apologies for the hijack by the way!
Here’s a link to some photos of the occasion.
It was indeed, but it was split at Scampton 25 years ago by Vulcan engineers. Could prove interesting.
cypherus, thanks for taking the time to reply to my question. I can appreciate that winching an Olympus into a Vulcan is no mean feat at the best of times. However, couple that with the fact that no one has probably changed or even dropped one for a good many years, let alone dressed a new one! That task becomes even harder! Add to that the performance/ground runs and setting up to follow and the time soon adds up! I work on fast jets and the sooties sometimes have problems with 199’s, and having helped them with engine changes in the past I can truly appreciate the task in hand!
Credit where it’s due, you are doing a damn fine job!!!
Must be good to install an new engine though, not having oil and soot stained hands for days afterwards gets my vote, but then I am a Fairy…………..
That Engine looks immaculate! Is it zero hours or just very well looked after?

Newark air museum have an FGR.2 simulator butler01, they are a nice bunch of people up there and they might let you measure up and take photos (for a donation to their cause!) if you asked nicely.
There’s some more info on Damien Burke’s site, along with masses of other information!

That’s correct Peter, looks like She’s going to be positioned between the end of 1 hangar and TIW.
