So is there anything missing that would prevent the engines from being cranked or even started?

great pictures les. Looking at the one of the engins, there appears to be some pipes missing, were then removed by the RAF to inhibit the engines or something?

Great pics Peppermiint jam! Thanks for posting! Do you have any pics of the crew door damage? I had heard awhile ago that there was something wrong with the crew door and it wasnt possible to open it up. I wonder what her interior is like?

As it happens i do have a picture. For some reason the skin of the crew door has a few holes punched through it. I’m not sure if it’s just idiots trying to get in there for ‘gizzits’ or if someone was genuinly trying to gain access for a good cause. I don’t know anything about the mechanism, or indeed how it works. All I know is that it is nitrogen based, as i was told by a Vulcan 903 who posts on here. If we’re lucky there might be a crew cheif or a former V groundcrew member who may be able to provide more information.

    Some info

Peter, the state of XM607 is poor as has been discussed on this forum a while ago. I managed to get into her cockpit a few years ago and i was almost brought to tears. less than 20 years ago she was bombing an island on the other side of the globe, I couldn’t believe that the old girl had been left to deteriorate so very badly. The last Vulcan on the Inventory of the RAF and she was a mess. Although Some of her internal organs were I believe donated to more servicable Vulcans. So at least something good has come from her demise.

Duxford’s example is rumoured to be in very good condition, having a roof over her head from day 1 has helped greatly!

As previous threads have mentioned, XM603 is in good condition (except for the NWS snag), but could be facing the axe.

I went on detachment to RAF Goose Bay back in 2003 and took some pictures of XL361 wich follow. Externally she seemed to be in reasonable condition, even with having not been painted for a good many years. Most of her tyres are flat though and there was some damage around the crew access door. Also it looked like a few families of birds had taken up residence in the main undercarridge bays. It was however, very good to see that she still proudly carries her IX(B) Sqn markings!

That’s about all i can find right now! I’m sure others might be able to shed light on the state of the other ladies!

There are no suitable hard points to lift a Vulcan without stressing the air frame. You can jack one up though!

Ah, so flip it on it’s spine and then air lift it out up side down you say…… 😀

There are literally hundreds of Vulcan sized hangars in good condition on Vulcan sized airfields all over the UK who are just gagging for the opportunity to forego whatever income they are currently earning given a chance to house the Vulcan ‘because it is the Vulcan’ and charge next to nothing for the service unlike those profiteering B’s at B’runtingthorpe who actually charge RENT for it.

    Moggy

    Sage words Moggy C.

As for the airlift idea, I seem to remember reading about a stripped out Vulcan being Airlifted into Lincoln City Centre for some reason or another when the Vulcan Force was winding down in the early 80’s. Memory is not the best, but I believe it took 3 Chinooks for the task. So whilst I like the way forestar is thinkng, I doubt 1 Chinook would cut the Mustard.

I have been an avid supproter of the project since i heard about it back in 2001 (ish). I will reserve judgement with my opinions until the website is updated or someone from the team makes a statement of some sort. It was always going to be a mammoth task from day 1, and i take my hat off to all of those involved in turning spanners/PR/admin etc. I’ve emailed Dr Plemming a few times and he has always responded promptly, and has been honest about anything I have asked, for that he has my respect. I want more than anything to see this project work, however the main question I would ask would be something along the lines of “Why did you not forsee this large cash shortfall when the return to flight project was first considered?”

I’ve seen a lovely house I’d like for about £250k, I know I could only get a mortgage for £175k, so I’m not going to attempt to buy it £75k short and just hope the money turns up.

I hope they manage it, I check the site most days, usually with my fingers crossed that there’s no bad news waiting for me!

    Here’s hoping…………………………

The 3 in question are sat on 39’s pan this morning, looking B/F’d and ready for thier crews. The gate guard is sat in a rather desolate hangar looking lonely!

Rob, I guess that shot of the 2 derelict Tornados makes some people feel old!!

The bits at the back are presumably the remains of the 2 GR.4s that crashed in 2002 & 2004? as the 3rd GR.1 has gone to MOD St Athan.

    Tim

    You mean this one Tim?
