Hi,
Just for clarification both tornados at elvington are now fully complete and assembled, indeed they are both in the hangar nice and dry!
Ollie
Looking at the photo link on this page, you can see that neither aircraft has engines fitted, so are not “fully complete”. Apologies if these have since been added.
I’d like to see her at Woodford, maybe recreating the nose to nose photos with 603 from a few years ago. That is if she can get into the air before the “footballers wives” move in and 603 becomes surplus to requirements. Is she next to follow 391…………………
One of our suppliers uses part of Wyton as a storage base, I was there last week and the manager told me that they were on the move to find other premises as Marshalls were moving in.
There you go, another urban myth? or news from the horses mouth? 😀
I have lived on and around Wyton for the last 11 years or so and have heard this rumour banded around. Something to note would be that the landing lights that were in a farmers field at the 09 end of the main runway were ripped out by force last year. Not the sort of thing I’d expect to see happen if Marshalls were planning to move in. The report I’d heard was that they had sent out a site survay team to assess Wyton, they had found that a great deal of money would need to be spent on the runways and taxiway to get the Airfield up to a useable site, so they removed Wyton from the short list.
Attached is a google earth pic of the airfield, prooving google are a bit behind on their updating, as the approach lights can be seen in said field!
Not sure if it counts…….
There was a spitfire in the garden of a guy who lived at the end of the runway at RAF St Mawgan if memory serves me correctly. Think he had a Canberra nose and some other aviation related things too. Anyone know if it’s real or plastic? And what is it’s history?
That in itself gives some cause for optimism regarding the fate of those remaining, but there were two that caught my eye as being under threat in the short to medium term, namely those at Woodford and at Waddington. Neither are being adequately maintained, and I seem to remember that there is a lot missing from the Waddington example.
Bruce
Bruce, you are correct. I went in the cockpit of Waddington’s Vulcan (XM607) back in 2000, most of her ‘Vital Organs’ have indeed been removed. However, externally she isn’t in too bad shape. She has recently been moved from her position on the Gate at Waddo to a permenant place on the other side of the airfield, near to the viewing area called the wave if memory serves me correctly. If anythig this example should be at the top of the list for preservation because of her actions in the Black Buck missions back in 1982.
One or two
Hi all, It’s my first attempt at attaching files, so bear with me if I make a mess of it! They’re not quite from the same era as and of the previous ones, but here’s a few I took in 2004, no prizes for guessing the location!
What about IX, XIII, 28, 31, 47, 100, of the sqns still going? No stories going around about IX, that’s for sure.
FF
I serve on IX(B) Sqn and can assure you that there is nothing in our history about being disgraced to my knowledge. Saying that I have heard the rumours about 8 Sqn and IV Sqn respectively, I always thought that they were rumours though, didn’t think there was any truth to them. Guess I was wrong!
Fair point
As above David, I only remember this because I believe the government looked (all be it very briefly) at ressurecting the project in the early 80’s, one of the problems was the lack of al the jigs etc, remembered hearing something about them being buried and forgotten about. Out of interest I believe that several of the boxes from the avionics suite were hidden away at the time of scrapping anly to be discovered recently and installed in Cosford’s example of the aircraft! It’s funny the stories you hear in the RAF!
TSR2
Hello to one and all. Enjoyed the thread so far! Unfortunately I don’t have many photos of aircraft that are not long for this earth. I did however hear rumours that alot of the manufacturing equipment for the doomed TSR2 project was burried in a quarry in Surry somehwere, can anyone confirm or deny this?!?
