Hi everyone. I have been reading this forum for a while now and finally decided to take the plunge and join. I decided to post here as historic aircraft are my main interest. I’m not sure my knowledge will match up to yours but I’m looking forward to chatting with you all.

Welcome Sgt Austin, I hope you enjoy the forum.

Great photos of a gorgeous aircraft – apart from Coningsby’s, are there any preserved Phantoms in grey/green camouflage? Suits it very well

No i believe that Coningsby’s is the only preserved one in that scheme. If still extant, West Freugh has a camo one looking a little worse for wear.

Us chaps at Waddo have a fine example outside 23 Sqn in the Air Defence Grey.

What’s the middle one (cockpit section)?

The phantom nose is in the compound of 2214 Sqn Air Training Corps, which is located next door to NEAM’s site at Usworth.

The nose is Ex-Coningsby FGR-2 XV460 and shares the compond with Vampire T11 XD622 (which quite frankly has seen better days).

There is no comparison IMHO between rebuilding an old ship like Gorshkov (which, even before years of sitting on the dock in neglect, was already written off as ‘not economically salvagable’ after an engine room fire) and building a new ship cleanly from scratch. Not to mention the difference in incentives: it is in the Russian/yard interest to extract whatever money they can from India, while this may not necessarily be the case when building for the domestic customer i.e. russian navy. Sevmash builds submarines with a displacement similar to a Kirov class cruiser, not exactly peanuts, not the simplest of ships. By 1995, Sevmash had constructed 125 submarines, including all the Northern Fleet’s SSBNs. Regardless of Sevmash’s capabilities, which notably included nuclear powered ships, Severodvinsk IIRC is where the only sufficiently large dock is…. it comes together.

Very fair point ! Given that all previous Russian carriers, Kiev, kuznetsov etc were built in what is now the Ukraine, i wish the Russains luck. Very true, that if they can build a Typhoon , then a carrier should be ok ! We shall see.
