I am not aware of any Catalina flying boat versions being landed on grass but there are a number of precedents for both flying boat PBYs and ‘wheels-up’ amphibian Cats being landed on ice/snow and taking off again in the same condition, both wartime and post war.

The photo of the two Catalinas in close formation over Loch Erne a few messages back is of interest as, on close inspection of the original, an airman can be seen sticking his head out of the top of the bow turret. Apparently, this was possible on Catalinas because of the way the airflow went around the turret in flight.

In reply to Mike Currill, Widgeon was NOT the name the British gave to the Mallard. They are two entirely different Grumman types. The Royal Navy did refer to their Widgeons as Goslings for a time however. Quite happy to name my source – page 216 of Air Arsenal North America by Phil Butler.

Apologies – in the above posting, I meant to say that this was in the 1985 show.

Not a great deal of help but I can tell you that PBY-5A Catalina G-BLSC/’JV928′ flew in the show because I was in it. It flew in from North Weald and landed before flying off to Hawarden. It landed at Hawarden, displayed there then flew back to Woodford and displayed there without landing before going back to North Weald.

There are no complete ex-RAF Catalinas surviving. The nearest you can get is the sectioned hull of FP216 that is on display at NAS Pensacola Florida. This did not see operational RAF service but remained in the USA for training aircrew during WWII.
