I think the excellent Cholet show is every two years. So, fingers crossed for next year – and that they book us again! Best aircrew catering in the business 🙂
Lovely shots. I guessed the Druine Turbi correctly but had to look F-PBGF up!
Keith is not well – probably best not to try contacting. There are likely to be other Duxford contacts who can help?
To Oban.
GC – can you confirm that RAF serial. I have FP285 as SOC in the Middle East in 1946.
The P.1127 appears in the list of aircraft he flew at the front of the Hikoki edition of Wings of the Weird and Wonderful but it is not one of the types fully described in the body of the book.
Based at Zweibrucken.
…also Avro Lancaster, Lincoln & York in post-war RAF service 1945-1950 by Martin Derry/Dalrymple & Verdun Publishing 2010
I’m reminded that when the third engine was first installed on the prototype Trislander G-ATWU, the revised fin was made by Miles Aviation (R&D) Ltd at Ford in Sussex and it did not include the finlet on top of the engine a shown in post 294. This was a later addition some time after it was exhibited at Farnborough 1970.
Some post-war Catalina conversions included the installation of an air-stair (including both examples operated by Duxford-based Plane Sailing Air Displays over the years). In fact, I’ve not checked exact dates but the original air-stair conversion implemented by Southern California Aircraft Corporation on its Landseaire model would have been a near-contemporary of the original Caravelles and may have even preceded it!
Be my guest! Bend the thread away! I got the answer I was looking for regarding the badge for 6eme Escadrille (although, do you think I can find a nice hi-res picture of the badge anywhere!) Happy to see lots of pictures of pretty and shiny P.2s….I like them as much as I like Piston Provosts 🙂 …oh! and Arado Ar-96s. Now there’s a type I would like to see fly.
Best regards;
Steve
Steve – if you go to https://www.facebook.com/swissairforcebadgeswissspotter/ and look for a message dated 17Oct16 you will find an image that may help a little.
Talk of the P-2 and John Watts is very nostalgic. I see that I flew in G-BJAX with John on 14May88 on a local from North Weald after that year’s Fighter Meet in formation with DC-3s G-AMCA and PH-DDA and again with Chris Diggens from West Malling to Duxford on 29Aug88. The first attempt ended in a precautionary landing back at ‘Malling with suspected smoke in the cockpit and then a successful transit to Duxford. I also flew twice with John Watts in P-2 G-BONE/U-142 on the evening of 25Jun85 when he was practising a synchro pair display for The Fighter Meet with Paul Warren Wilson in G-BJAX out of North Weald. Let’s just say they had a lot of fun!
Back to G-BJAX and Meier Motors – I seem to recall a post on this forum some time ago to the effect that it was not a rebuild project but it was being used for parts.
It is the insignia of 6eme Escadrille, Swiss Air Force and the motto at the bottom read “Jusqu’au bout” (Until the End).
I had several flights in that lovely aeroplane.
I’m very familiar with that black void under the control yoke – it’s the route to the bow hatch for mooring up purposes! No gun there now of course.
Catalina 🙂
