What aircraft does your nose wheel bay belong to? A Hunter/Sea Hawk/Harrier I presume?
Sorry for delay, yes its a Harrier.
But unlike any Harrier i’ve come across, as this number pre-dates the first GR1.
The cockpit is located in the States, and i can only assume it is either from an XV-6A Kestrel/P-1127 or was also built around that time (mid-sixties).
Any Hawker employees / experts out there please ?
The engines may already be earmarked for a local museum, I recall reading something along these lines somewhere recently.
Where ?
Save The Varsity !
According to a website on Google, the Varsity was ‘gifted’ to the airport (fire section perhaps ?) approx 2-3 years ago.
However there is a small photo of it on p233 of the current Wrecks’n’Relics 19 but i cant make out if it has aerial Peter needs.
If it is too far gone, perhaps items like engines & cockpit can be saved ?
Thoughts anyone ?
There is a VERY battered and rotten example in a corner at Bristol (Lulsgate) airport. Both it and the not so battered and rotten Trident 2 sitting beside it are due to be scrapped in the near future.
Any idea of whom to contact ? If a rescue mission can be organised (BAPC ?)
Enough. Too much, some might say.
Allan
Indeed, i agree with James, fascinating stuff… a most enlighting thread of an overlooked part of Lanc’ history. 😀
Civil Lancs & Lincolns
I don’t have a copy of Arthur Pearcy’s book, but for what it’s worth, I think that the aircraft you describe is indeed Lincoln G-ALPF/RE290. The nose fairing on G-ALPF was built on the original Lincoln fuselage, not the deepened fuselage developed later for the failed meat carrier conversion of the Lincoln. Consequently the appearance of the fairing on G-ALPF was closer to that of the Lancastrians. And the fuselage pannier was a very obvious bolt-on underneath, not faired into the nose. ‘Lincoln at War’ pages 154/5 have a couple of good shots of G-ALPF before and after conversion. It was converted in 1949 and went on to complete 46 operations on the Airlift, 1 freight and 45 hauling fuel oil.
Yes indeed, many thanks Allan and to those posting the pic’s. On Google theres a pic of ZP-CBR with the deeper bomb bay (sealed ?) and also deeper Lancastrian nose fairing blended in to suit. Is this the same as G-ALPF ?
I’ve also seen quoted the following registrations: RE376, RF417, RF458, ZP-CBQ and ZP-CBS. Perhaps the civil & miltary reg’ is one & the same a/c ? But just how many ‘meat hauler’ type conversions were there ?
Going back to the Berlin Airlift, the pic i saw (of G-ALPF ?) showed just the standard Lancastrian type nose/tail fairings but with a square type pannier.
Perhaps this ~was~ a Halifax/Halton pannier grafted on ? But i also recall the text saying it only made one or two flights in this configuration so perhaps it is a pic of ‘LPF ? (Thinx: time to purchase both books perhaps 😮 )
tut, should have bid more !
Sold for £410
Yeh, beat me to it (huff), but at least it wasn’t thousands of pounds or pulled by eBay like the Vulcans.
Anybody know who ‘fred34a’ is ?
How about a Hillson bi-mono ?
Lovely looking little thing, always reminded me of a cut’n’shut Proctor 😀
The 2 seater that was at Dunsfold just prior to the closure was ZB601. This then went to Yeovilton, and is now looking forlorn on her belly on the fire dump there… Having been robbed blind for a variety of Indian 2 seaters
Thanks for that info’, however Ians nose section was only a nose section at/from Dunsfold believed painted silver (?)
However, ZB601 is still a complete fuselage/airframe unless they re-attached the nose ???
And personally I’d like to rob it blind as well, as it seems they left a few choice items behind including the canopys (last time i saw it anyway).
Dees01 do you have access to this airframe (or any other wrecker) by any chance ??? 😀
Peter – There is very effective action that can be taken – simply buy what you want! I am sure that if you ring up the owner he will talk business with you. There was a Dakota there which travelled to Hatfield and then North Weald so deals can be done. However a large sum of money was paid for these machines – don’t expect to buy for less !
How about £20K for the lot ????
. It’s been for sale for ages but the owner has always insisted on the £10k he originally paid for it when it was airworthy! Unreasonable and unrealistic.
Folks… surely it could of course just be a hoax anyway and i dont mean the bidding.
The ‘seller’ has only just registered, but anyone could go and take a picture of it & stick it on eBay.
If anybody knows the true identity of the owner, then they can place a bid, then request the vendors details (you can only do this for a transaction you are both involved in)… and see if its one & the same person.
After that, just retract your bid… unless you want a Vulcan for £2.5M+ 😮
Folks… a lot of this discussion centers on the pro’s and con’s of vertical flight, but how about just normal flight ?
The CAA (assuming you’ve solved the major design authority + other problems) could simply ensure the nozzle levers have been removed.
Wg Cmdr T.A.Harper
That’s right oiitsme, (I was there then too). .
Do’s anyone know of a Wg Cmdr T.A.Harper ? Whom i believe may have been OC at Wittering during the final years of GR.3 operations circa 1993-95 ?
Cheers…..
I can confirm that Harrrier two seater in RN colours XW268 is still in a yard in a corner of Sussex….. she is not moved soon (i.e in the next six months) it will be too late.
Peter,
I’ve sent you a PM re’ the above aircraft.
Thanx !
This one was parked in a corner at Flugausstellung Hermeskeil, any thoughts on type/registration?
According to the list in the new issue, its GR3 XZ998.
Re’ the one with Tom Reilly in Florida, could it be an AV-8A ?
