the impressions of an italian at DX:

just as I said in a previous post, it was a marvellous occasion to see a unique gathering of warbirds, to spend some time with some really nice chaps, to buy some interesting books, prints, aviation junk etc…
I enjoyed every single bit of it, yes, the ticket price was kinda high, but always less than an average concert or a world cup ticket…
4 quid for the display line? Well since u spent 30 for the airshow…

Dont complain too much chaps, one day we’ll say “I remember when u just needed 30 quid to see the most beautiful airshow in the world!” 😉

The only complaint I have to do is towards some of the other spectators: the “colonizing” of fences is disgusting, there’s really no justification for it.
Your chair has been thrown away or moved? Fair enuff, we all have the same rights, and if u arrived earlier this doesnt give u any right, period.

As per stepladders… banned? naaaah, i’d rather gather them all in well fenced “stepladders area”, I’m sure the obvious competition for the highest ladder will give some headaches to the ATC 😉

Other than this, fair weather, marvellous atmosphere and above all the funniest airshow commentator ever! That french chap is unique, we were thinkin about creating an appreciation club! :p
“zee french air force shot down over 900 german fighters during zee battle of France!” simply hylarious! 😀

    Cheers

    P.S.
    yes yes, I know….WE ARE WORLD CHAMPIONS!!! 😀 😀 😀

when i was in Seattle I wasnt able to visit Paul Allen’s collection because it was closed to public with no date set. The rumors I heard in the Museum of Flight restoration hangars is there are some troubles between the associates, but once again it’s just a rumor, so dont take it for granted 😉

On returning, someone had stuck a 5ft high windbreak in front of our little pile, great, we couldn’t even find it for a while and had to slide along the fence to retreive it, now you might say that we were up to the same trick of trying to claim a place early, but that was sheer ignorance as far as I’m concerned

I complained about this idiotic attitude last year as well, and I honestly wonder why the organizers are so zealant in asking money for the show and dont actually do anything about this. What these selfish ppl dont know (or more probably dont care about..) is that many ppl attending the show come from all over Europe (if not from the States or other places), and the last thing they want to do is paying 28 quid to see their freakin windbreaks or the butts of the so called photographers who feel the right to climb on a stepladder and make the only moment when u can almost touch your favorite warbird a really bad moment..how can ppl be so selfish??? I was unpleasantly impressed the first time I saw it because i’ve always looked at UK as a very well mannered country (u do actually enter a queue to take a bus!!), but all these freaks and geeks who disrespect the others (and prolly even enjoy doing that, giggling behind their stupid fences or on top of their ladders..) should have a place of their own: BEHIND the tank bank..
Sorry for the ranting, anyways if u’ll see someone giving $hit to any of the upsaid fellas that’s gonna be me..

    Alex

    P.S.
I saw the stepladder thing happening at a major airshow even here in italy, and the chap (a british photographer) didnt have a really warm treatment from the rest of the crowd.. italians can be really really nasty…

..as per the the ppl who “complain” about seeing always the same planes.. when they’ll be definitely grounded (cuz u dont think they’ll fly forever, do u?) u’ll regret it, enjoy ’em as long as u can. Eventually it’s not just about seeing the airshow, it’s about spending some time with good friends, havin fun ravaging thru piles of aviation related junk to buy some leetle gadget, havin a good walk, smellin some avgas… I really dont understand this snobbish attitude about Legends..

what I’d really have loved to see this year would have been the flugwerk FW and the newly acquired 262 of the messerchmitt foundation. When I was in Seattle I made a quick hop to the facility where they build it and trust me, it was a sight!! I dunno what’s behind the invitation mechanism at DX, but one thing is for sure, u can’t ignore the presence in europe of planes like the 262 and the 190 (even if they’re replicas), they even attended airshow here in the continent, so I really wonder if it’s just a matter of crossing the Channel or what..

dude, I’ve been into this situation too, I did the stenciling for a friend’s Fokker Dr.I here in Italy (I should have the Illustrator files somewhere yet..). I’ve been seekin for pics for long time before producing what we considered the most accurate version, and after a month we applied them another pic came out which showed small differences(even if it was on a Fokker D.VII!). I do believe mine’s quite accurate, been spending hours on redoing each curve (even the Fok. DrI stenciling on the fuselage), so if u want it drop me a message and I’ll mail it to u 🙂

Er Alex – its the prop……

    I KNOW!!! 😀

    Yup.

It takes twice as long to walk 62.8 ft as it does to walk 31.4 ft

I don’t think I need an explanation of that.

However what I did find was that to make the times identical it was necessary on the bigger circle to run at double my walking pace.

Ergo, the tips of the longer prop move faster. QED

    Moggy

lol did u actually go out and try? 😉 😀

Give up Moggy and BELIVE ! it will help.

Ok go in the garden tonight with a stick and a bit of string, make two circles one 20ft dia the other 10ft. walk the 20ft circle at your normal walking pace and time it, then the 10ft, when you have done this twice come back with your f ndings and I will explain why and what happend to you.

er… angular velocity is kinda clear mate… if u r on the tip, u need to cover a longer distance to keep up with the center, hence u have to go faster.. tips are faster mate..

ok, let’s try to explain myself…

the sound of the T-6 is just like a trade mark, and it’s due to the exhaust and prop (just like for any other plane). I already explained what cavitation is, and it might occurr to any prop plane, expecially when overrevving or if the prop governor goes bonkers (it can happen to fixed pitch props too).
To sum it up every plane can make a louder and lower sound (I heard microlights cavitating), and it happens almost always when overrevving, but it’s not a constant thing, it might last a bunch of seconds.
The T-6 is just a loud machine because of the short exhaust, that’s it. Every plane has a sound of its own: the merlin purrs, the griffon growls, the DB whistles..

repeat with me… cavitation  😉

as far as I know the typical sound of the T6 is due to the very short exhaust (the sound is indeed different in Harvards, which have a longer exhaust stack). Btw every plane has a sound of its own..
The phenomenon u r talkin about is called cavitation, where the tips of a prop exceed the speed of sound and other than producing a really loud and low sound they actually lose aerodynamic efficiency, which is really something u dont want to happen.
Cavitation may occurr if some of the given specs (dive speed, RPM settings etc..) are not respected. A prop cavitating isnt usually a good sign, expecially if in a normal flying attitude.
