about ejection seat mishaps i posted this some pages ago

I had a nice meeting tonight with many fellow pilots, and we happened to talk about the “accidental ejections” at airshows.. Well, apart for the accidents happened to the ground crews it seems like the ones happened to children at airshows and such are legends.
The Martin Baker ejection seats have a double lever: one to detonate the glass charge or to shoot off the canopy, and the other to eject. The reason for this double thing is that if u want to go for a belly landing u can decide to shoot off yr canopy to ease yr way out of the frame instead of shooting yrself out.. anyway there are two safety pins for these levers, and it’s impossible to remove them even because everytime u enter in a cockpit there’s a pilot or a ground chief staring at u. Last but not least u need a 40 lbs pull on the lever to activate it, so eventually it really sounds impossible, unless u r a techie working inside the pit and pulling the wrong lever..

    cheers

The mobile phone thing might work out as long as u keep the phone right up an open barrell of avgas.. I think we’re all going a bit paranoid about safety lately..
Another nice flying mishap my canadian friend told me about happened to a flying officer while landing: he had an american F-15 Strike Eagle landing in front of him, the back seat taken by a ground techie, who pulled by mistake the canopy release lever: the canadian pilot on the Harvard 2 had a camera installed and recorded everything. There are other funny stories he told me about, but a forum page wouldnt be enuff I guess.. the dumbness of some military pilots is creepy guys..
Never heard the story of accident happened to the ground techie driving a tow vehicle with a F-104? Seems like a heavy braking caused the tow bar crack points to break and the poor sod was killed by the pitot tube of the 104!! YKES!!!
Mechanics FODs are another recurrent accident.. everything started with the Sabre and her nice air intake!

That is a very good point Dan. I’ve seen this not only on airfields but also in movies – one I watched the other day, Dive Bomber (1941) they seemed to light up every time they stepped out of a plane. We were taught emphatically no naked flames (including cigarettes) within 50 metres of an aircraft and 100 metres of a bowser. I have told people this when on an airfield they they look at you stupid, not believing their cancer-stick can possibly light the fuel fumes. Idiots.

yeah, tell this to Pappy Boyington or Adolf Galland! Seems like Dolfo had even a gyroscopic ashtray installed in the cockpit!!

how was that horrible song “shot ppl got no reason..” 😀
Apart for jokes, small ppl can absorb G loads better than tall pilots, how about that? 😉

well it’s not something u find everyday, but considering the relevant number of Gipsy powered aeroplanes still flying it shouldnt be that hard to find 🙂

The boyfriend has been moaning all Christmas about aforementioned costs – apparently thats the reason he isn’t taking me to Paris for my birthday  Oh well, this is what happens when you face up to the reality of being a flying widow I guess!

As soon as your partner starts moaning about your passions run for cover, it’s just the beginning of the end: an ex-girlfriend had the brilliant idea of telling me “u gotta choose:me or your aircrafts!”… that’s where I was the day after

Well, I don’t know what oil you were using. On the YAK55, we had this problem shortly after we got it. All covered in Oil, a real pain 😮 We were using W15/50 synthetic oil. After a short discusstion we decided to try some old stuff on it, and put in SAE 100 oil (summer) and SAE 80 (winter). These are also known as 100 weight and 80 weight oil respectively. The oil mess down the fuselage all but stopped.

U had a Yak55?? We have some friends here who own 3 Yak52 and 1 Yak55, and I’ve seen them doing some crazy stuff with that 55!
Dave I know, at least it wont get into the wheel bay area, but of course the long exhaust is not the solution… Oh well, I love oil fragrance! 🙂
