…He had been shot down by the Navy and was going to kill the first gunner he found, he had been on continual ops for three days and was benzedrined out of his eyeballs. It took two Royal Marines on each arm to hold him down while the MO gave him a shot to knock him out.

that’s what I’m saying, considering the age of an average USAAF pilot (around 25 years old i’d say?), and bearing in mind that u actually have to be fit enough to sit in a cockpit and bear with the G-loads and general stress factors, one must reckon that the doses of anphetamines used at the time might well have been really heavy. I remember reading in an italian doctor report kept in a small war museum here about the symptoms of the wounded “green devils” found in the Montecassino monastry: many of them were gone mad because of battle stress, but others showed an evident abuse of drugs.

a third is a disconcerning number… let’s say 100.000 109s were built, it would mean that more than 33.000 would have been written off in such accidents, not really the numbers of a succesfull and longeve plane isnt it? The 5% percentage would be more acceptable, but still I would never take such researches so seriously.

Hmm… I seem to recall reading somewhere that the Chinese built something along similar lines – the fuselage doesn’t look right to be a Mossie (but then, given the limited info the Chinese might have had in doing it, I suppose it might be…)

I think u r confusing it with the Chinese Stirling, mate 😉

…This led to Benzedrine being produced in tablet form as a stimulant. Even though this drug was supposed to be inhaled, many people cracked the containers open and swallowed the paper drenched in Benzedrine that was contained inside, often with coffee or alcohol.

yes, I remember about reading this detail of the little papers drenched with benzedrine and put in the pilot’s mugs.
I wonder if this anphetamines consumption led to some dependance after or during the war.

definitely interesting! What’s the airframe status? How r u going to bring it back home?
Sometimes the way of bureaucracy can be a nightmare, but a Lanc is well worth it!!
Do u have a roomy backyard btw? And last but not least will it be at Legends?? 😀

I always had a mixed feeling about the Red Baron… The impression that I got after reading the Richtofen’s bio by Peter Kilduff is that he was surely in love, but just with himself: his need to emerge from his “humble” origins, his desire to excel as a pilot and above all as an absolute hunter.. readin his notes is like reading a hunter’s diary!

Even the brave choice to fly a recognizable red triplane makes u realise how much superior he considered himself(Now some of u might point out that he decided to paint his plane in such a gaudy way because of his homo ego, but hey..) 😀
He was surely a character, or the right man at the right time if you want, and I think that his obsessive research for success and perfection left little or no room for girls.. he eventually didnt enjoy his popularity as well, nor the official dinners and parties, unless any baron or high politician would recognize and celebrate his skills.. The pnly thing that he seemed to enjoy a lot was hunting, which doesnt surprise me at all…

as Daz noticed it’s more likely a bunch of 109 pieces packed up together.. I guess 250 grand is a bit pricey though.. I wonder what’s the engine status..
The “quantity” window is too much fun, they prolly have others for sale, surely found in China 😀

Andy u really mean there’s gonna be a workshop who’s gonna reproduce the DB601/5?? That would give such a great breath to the warbird scene, but I still think it’s the most anti-economic task to take for a workshop.. do u have any other details about it? Bear in mind that the DB is a really one of a kind engine, with a really complicated crankshaft..

    Cheers
