oohh! That would be why then 😉
This won’t help much but I would love to know it’s identity. The serial isn’t visible on the original,
Cheers
John
Hi John, Great photo! I can’t help you much with the identification of this Stirling but do you know where this was taken? In my humble opinion I would suggest that this is taken from South Marston where they were produced/repaired.
So very few pictures out there of this fantastic aircraft, lovely to see your pic!
Indeed the Russian invasion of Poland in ’39 is often overlooked. I’m not aware that after 1941 they were ‘enemies’ though. They ‘liberated’ Poland in their advance on Berlin, don’t forget.
Churchill made promises to the Polish government in exile that he didn’t fulfil. His denial of permission for the Polish marchers in the victory parade was an (IMHO) un-necessary kowtow to Stalin’s demands. He, as did the other powers, failed to use diplomatic pressure to hold Stalin to recognising a properly constituted Polish government rather than a Soviet puppet.
As well as being a psychopathic thug, Stalin was a very effective negotiator, and I’d certainly not want to negotiate with him from a position of strength or weakness. But then, I’m not a diplomat. Maybe Churchill had no options in negotiations with Stalin, and – given Churchill’s self-serving memoirs – we have little opportunity to know how hard he tried. But even if he had no choice, he failed the Polish government and people.
Is it not believed by some that it was churchills government who had something to do with Sikorki’s B-24 Liberator that went down off the coast of Gibraltar? With double agent Kim Philbey on the rock the day the aircraft went down, and with the arrival of a Russian aircraft at Gibraltar the day before the crash, Churchills government was very quick to point the finger of blame at the Russians. However, as mentioned earlier, was it a secret that the allied forces were in no position to fight another war so soon after the first? Sure they signed a peace pact with Poland incase of Nazi invasion – but did they really think Hitler would go through with it if they feared the British and French would enter into the war? The British hoped (rather hopefully) that Hitler would turn his aggression to the East i.e Russia. Towards 1943, Sikorski’s exiled government was an imbarresment to Churchills government, his plane crash was rather convienient for Churchill!!!!

Also, let’s not forget the levels of pride amongst the OTU ground crews. Many would have chewed their arms off to be ‘air crew’ but yet they made sure that they carried out their duties that I am sure went above and beyond their call of duty. Yes, they had their back against the walls when it came to spares, floor space and pressure from above to get the crews trained ‘yesterday’ but some would argue (bomber command to one side) that many of the operational combat units were maintained to a lesser extent just to get the birds turned around and back up in the sky as soon as humanly possible.
(Just checked, lots of full stops in this text 😉

Hi Phil,
This may not be of help but you never know. The former South Marston ‘Vickers’ airfield in South Marston (East Wiltshire) has the old paint shed up for sale at the moment. It is part of FS2 which is a big hanger. I don’t know the agents details off the top of my head but will be driving past there later on today if this may be of interest – may be also able to get a few pics.
Good luck in your search
Gavin
Sorry Moggy
Won’t do it again 😉

‘Vickers’ South Marston, Wiltshire
Hi Phil,
As promised, here are some pics of the old South Marston airfield. There is two actually available (I have taken pics of the agents boards just in case this was of interest?)
Although very little is known about this airfield, it has an amazing history. The Spit mk 1’s were made here as well as short Stirlings, the Luftwaffe tried to hit it several times but Oxford suffered as a result! If I can be of any help let me know

Hi,
Sorry forgot to mention that they are aslo up for sale. In the area that these are located, it is very hard to get planning permission for housing. Developers have tried, but as there is very little chance of them being able to develop the land remains available.
There is a big for sale board but it had fallen down and doesn’t look very attractive.

How b****y pathetic!
We had a similar thread running on the International Cockpit Club Forum for a while. Then people started getting grumpy because stuff they wanted to bid on was being highlighted in the forum thread. The perception was that it would attract more attention and bump up the price. So after a while I deleted the thread.
The same sort of comments have been made here in the past too.
What the? I can’t quite believe this has happened! Offence is only directed to people who know that they are guilty of this. There seems to be a certain group of people who believe that anything ‘aviation related’ belongs to a special ‘club’ and that outsiders are not worthy enough of this special ‘click’. The fact that an object is for sale and is being advertised on multiple sites/forums etc only goes to back up what the price of an actual object is worth. Don’t people understand that something is only worth what somebody is willing to pay?
For instance, I could be in a position to suggest that there is a Shorts Stirling body that is very much a shell and quite frankly a wreck here in the UK. This could be offered to my next door neighbour only, who pays ten squid for the item – does that mean that it is worth £10. No, it doesn’t! If you are selling your house – would you use an estate agent who does not use the websites Rightmove, or fish4homes? Of course you b****y well wouldn’t! You want everyone who is in the market for buying a property to see your item for sale so that the best price can be acheived.
The fact that people get grumpy because an item is on ebay, but is also highlighted on this great site really need to be happy in the fact that the price they are paying is the true price. If a Spitfire wheel is on ebay, and the highest bid is £12.50 – then it appears on this site and the price goes up to £98, then the fair price of that wheel is £98!!!!!! For Gods sake, if you were selling something – wouldn’t you want the world to bid on it? I am a pilot, I have flown into combat, I have (and do) fly big commercial airliners, I don’t like the thought of people who have only been in the back of an EasyJet airliner who think they have the right to safeguard certain objects (not directed at genuine avaiationists!!)
Sorry for my rant but had to be said!!

Gavin
Who wants to pay a fair price? we all want it for nothing !
Well, be happy in the fact that you are doing s*d all for the preservation/restoration and future prospects of saving rare and vital aviation objects! We all want something for nothing – but the subject we love so much can only be properly preserved if every tom/dick and harry can’t get their hands on them, otherwise everything will end up on the scrap yard!
Guys, you are obviously into your aircraft preservation – which is great, this is how it should be. The point I am trying to say is (probably put very badly) is that if a Spitfire was worth £200 then all the remaing examples would end up in scrap or in some chavs back garden used as a party piece for some stuck up kid. Prices are what they are so that only the genuine people can put them to a good cause. The fact that people have to pay higher prices for these items mean that the scrappies etc can’t get their hands on these valuable artifacts – surely you can see this? If everyone ‘had something for nothing’ then would there be any need to preserve stuff? no.

Big apology
Is it too late to say a very big sorry? I can see I have ruffled some feathers and really did not aim, or want to upset anyone. Any room for forgiveness out there??? You have made some valuable points and I will from now on keep my mouth shut – sorry again guys, I love reading your threads and would hate to be dispised amongst you.

Not a harrier though 😉 points to anyone who can work out what it is :diablo:
I think its a mirage F1
Good thinking old boy, but if you freeze the frame (can’t copy and paste it) the air intakes are far too big for the mighty Mirage – I would say definatley Harrier for sure!
(Spitfire one already done!)
This is a great video, hats off to the crews who fly this everyday…….I think I would dirty my underwear!
