I have 74” on the way, but I’ll need a remote control to operate it.
DUXFORD 25 YEARS AGO (Part 2)
Here’s another look at Duxford in 1988. As well as the P-63 arrival on 6-1-88, TFC took delivery of Hurricane G-HURI on 30-1-88 (25 years ago today). The airframe was a composite of several Canadian built Hurricanes, and had been shipped to the UK in 1982. Restoration had been carried out at Coventry and Coningsby, but a lot of work was needed before first flight on 1-9-89. G-HURI flew with TFC as ‘XR-T’ until joining HAC in 2002.
First pic by Andy Robinson, last is mine from 23-8-88, remainder from Tony Clarke Collection:
Also pictured in January 1988 is the TFC B-25D N88972. An ex RCAF airframe, she had arrived at Duxford the previous November. From Tony Clarke’s collection comes an undated shot possibly at Vancouver and two shots at Duxford on 17-1-88. Last 4 are by Andy Robinson also from January 88:
Duxford Sunday 27th January:
The DAS Ambassador was fitted with her spinners today, a small detail but another significant step towards completion:
The IWM B-17G has also had some additions recently. The chin turret (replica) guns are now installed:
Sally B is also getting some chin turret work this winter:
Also in Hangar 2, the Plane Sailing Catalina has work ongoing with engines, nosewheel, starboard outer wing and windows. The artwork has suffered a little in the process !
The IWM Harrier GR.9A had tail sections removed this afternoon, the next step in the move to London:
Hangar 3 has a rather Teutonic atmosphere at the moment:
SNJ-5 G-CHIA/85061 departed this afternoon (with onboard ‘camera crew’), but I’m sure we’ll see her back sometime:
Duxford Thursday 17th January:
Cold but bright today, and some interesting frost and ice patterns:
Spitfire I P9374 was out for a photo shoot in the snow, too far away to capture but looking good on return to Hangar 2:
An interesting comparison with the IWM Spitfire I in Hangar 5, now resting on her wheels:
Other IWM projects continue:
Classic Wings G-AKIF inbound:
Crew ferry was Cherokee G-ARVU ( 50 years old, so a vintage aircraft in its own right!):
Duxford Sunday 13th January:
Despite the cold and dull weather, there was plenty happening this morning at Duxford. The DAS Ambassador had a significant structural addition as the centre fin was put in place:
There was work in progress on several IWM projects in Hangar 5:
The Lancaster nose is currently airborne, as work on a new base section is underway:
In Hangar 2, Miss PickUp is receiving a lot of TLC while in dry-dock for the winter:
TFC were shuffling again:
Finally, 10 points for anyone identifying the following. They came from the same country:
