Duxford Sunday 3rd August:
Some of the Duxford warbird fleet were on airshow duty today. ARCo Spitfire PV202 spent the day at Tibenham:
SallyB and the OFMC pair took part in the ‘Heroes at Highclere’ charity event:
The Grace Spitfire, ML407, was ready for a concert appearance at Audley End this evening:
Some of the many visitors today:
There was a good attendance for the BMAA bonus weekend, though the wind was a little stronger than forecast (nobody on board at the time):
From this afternoons additional flight – I’m sure DCW will add more.
SHUTTLEWOTH ??
Old Warden Friday 1st August:
I popped over to Old Warden this morning for a look at the recently re-opened Swiss Garden. The facelift has worked wonders, and I recommend a stroll through on your next visit.
Back to the aerodrome, and this replica WWI Mk.4 (?) Tank was departing:
As usual, there’s always something different in Hangar 1. Presently receiving attention are the Blackburn B.2 and Bristol Monoplane:
The Camel replica will probably be dismantled shortly after the WWI Airshow (Aug 10th):
The Camel’s rudder is the first part to be covered:
It was good to hear that the Sopwith Triplane repairs are well underway. Many parts have already been sent to other workshops and the fuselage repairs are progressing:
The Triplane has donated a few items to the workshop’s Wall Of Fame. Some of these ‘souvenirs’ go back a long way:
A couple of other shots from the Museum Hangars:
The Demoiselle film replica was on the move. This pic cries out for a caption competition:
Which reminds me (I nearly forgot). The Comet flew today:
More Comet pics later….
Many thanks as usual to all at Old Warden.
I’ve been intending to continue the photo coverage of ‘Duxford 25 years ago’, but the next instalment may take a while longer.
However, I was sent a photo yesterday which is a reminder of a very significant event of 1989. June and July saw a great deal of activity during the filming of the ‘Memphis Belle’ movie (Already well covered on this forum). These pictures were taken during a Duxford visit I made on 3-7-89:
But 25 years ago today, the last ‘working’ B-17 (F-BEEA of IGN) was lost in a take-off accident at Binbrook. There were no fatalities, some Duxford personnel were on board and instrumental in the prompt evacuation before the aircraft burnt out.
Duxford Friday 25th July:
There were plenty of Spitfires about today, with TFC’s EP120 and MV268 both out for engine runs. HAC’s BM597 departed South, and OFMC’s MH434 made three Wing-To-Wing trips:
TFC’s Nimrod is due to fly at Old Warden on Sunday, and was out for an engine run. Note the additional bad-weather mod:
A relaxing Harvard flight:
A visiting Super Cub:
The day was completed by a Cub practising short-field landings:
Duxford Tuesday 22nd July:
The DAS Herald (G-APWJ) was moved this morning into ‘Airliner Row’ between the Britannia and VC-10. With the paint-stripping well underway, she’s actually looking a lot tidier than of late:
The IWM F-15 in Hangar 5 is also gradually losing her paint:
I doubt either airframe will end up with a finish like this:
The TFC Spitfire XIV was out for some high power engine runs today. She is still on the list to fly on Saturday at the ‘Spitfires, Merlins and Motors’ event, together with SM845 and ML407 ( Buchon ‘Yellow 10’ and OFMC P-51D also flying):
