Duxford Friday 26th July:
Sorry for the late report, the forum software seemed to have a problem with the first few pictures…
Another very busy Friday, with plenty of interest. The proceedings opened on a rather vulgar note, with the early arrival of a German Harvard. A sortie for Display Authorisation was followed by a local flight:
Also in the circuit was Malibu N41518, though failing to raise the tone. Don’t ask….
An early departure was the Catalina heading North for the Sunderland show:
Fennec N14113 was airborne twice for practice:
The HAC Spitfire arrived, the Nimrod departed:
Chipmunk G-BCXN / WP800 arrival:
Everyone was waving today, including this passing Merlin:
Seen in Hangar 5. A cable mounted gunnery target ?
More to come.
Duxford Wednesday 24th July:
A quick visit this morning saw the departure of the HAC Hurricane:
The Rolls Royce Spitfire PR.XIX G-RRGN / PS853 was flying as ‘Merlin 11’ today, and since it had not returned when I left, it was presumably on delivery:
On the subject of Spitfires, a new layout in Hangar 2 allows a new angle on G-AIST / P7308:
Next door, a closer look at an ARCo ‘lodger’, Stampe G-AMPI:
The TFC P-47G was out on the grass, but only for fuel. I don’t think it uploaded enough to get to Texas…..
However the rumours turn out, let’s be grateful for the chance to experience such a lovely machine ( Eagle pair, Shipley/Hinton 25-5-13):
DUXFORD 25 YEARS AGO (Part 7)
Duxford’s most notable event of 1988 was an airshow marking the 50th anniversary of the Spitfire’s entry into RAF service. The day before the show (July 9th) was blessed with fine weather, and saw a recently completed TFC Spitfire (G-CDAN/TB863) out for an engine run:
Arranged for viewing were replica Spitfires created for the ‘Piece Of Cake’ production:
Other airshow performers gathering were Harvard G-BICE, the RN Swordfish and Firefly, and BBMF Spitfire and Hurricane:
Airshow day (July 10th) saw low cloud and poor visibility. Much of the display was cancelled, but a huge crowd attended to witness an astonishing 14 Spitfires lined up. Including G-CDAN/TB863:
G-FIRE:
G-AWII / AR501:
PM631:
G-ALGT / RM689:
All scans from slides by Andy Robinson, with many thanks.
Duxford Saturday 20th July:
Among the Bonus Day Fly-In visitors were three ‘L-Birds’:
Cub G-BGPD:
Super Cub N123SA:
Bird Dog G-PDOG:
The Grace Spitfire waited for the evening sun before venturing outside:
Many thanks again to HH/MH TT and PL, plus NK, PK and gang for access and company, and to Duxman and Bomberflight for the fairy cakes…..
Duxford Friday 19th July:
Duxford’s runway was very busy today, a good mix of warbirds, pleasure flying, visitors and circuit training. The Tower staff even had to accommodate an hour’s training by a Mildenhall Hercules. Dreadful conditions for photography, however, with too much sun in the wrong place again.
Duxford Thursday 18th July (Part 2):
Princess Elizabeth was dismantled and put into a container this afternoon. Sad to see her go (again), but many thanks to the owners for their generosity in bringing her to Duxford.
Thanks also to today’s crew for their tolerance towards us photographers, it can’t be easy working with an audience.
Duxford Thursday 18th July (Part 1):
Each year, there are a few visitors to Flying Legends who are reluctant to leave. The Red Bull Corsair (and B-25) are now scheduled to depart tomorrow morning. Another machine staying on was the Shuttleworth Hind, but today a crack team of specialists from Bedfordshire completed the necessary repairs, and after some engine runs, K5414 returned to Old Warden:
Airborne today was the Plane Sailing Catalina, which seems to have brought back some red leading edges from her trip to Austria last weekend:
The TFC fleet has been enjoying the sunshine, the Hellcat was among the machines out today:
Frankie is running again, this time with ARCo:
Yak 50 F-AZXK has been based for a while, and the owner was enjoying himself with some aerobatics this afternoon. (Quite a change from the B-17)
Dornier 228NG D-CNEU departed for Fairford:
‘Broadsword 31’ dropped in for a while (King Air G-IASM):
Last, but certainly not least, three sorties from the Rolls Royce Spitfire PR.XIX PS853:
Thanks for additions, list amended.
FLYING LEGENDS 22: JULY 12/13 2014
DCW
I’ve had some queries about ‘who flew what’ at Legends this year. This list is a first draft of an attempt to record the pilots concerned. Many thanks to all who helped, any omissions and spelling mistakes are my fault. Please send corrections and additions, I will edit this list accordingly.
Some swapping occurred for the Balbo formation.

Duxford Monday 15th July:
Another hot and sunny day, and lots of Flying Legends homeward bound:
The Hurricane was out for a photo sortie before departure:
Other news, and the Blenheim paint work is underway:
Visiting Swiss Air Force Puma on the way to RIAT:
Not an aircraft I’d usually feature, but Ukrainian visitors are not common:
Next:
Finally, that B-25 again:
Here until Thursday, but presently wrapped up:
DCW, were you one of the seated group near the flight line, debating wether the Gladiator was the best sounding aircraft there?
Not guilty, no time for sitting down on a day like today!
Talking of engine noise, there’s a bird problem at Duxford at the moment (lots of crows/rooks on the grass) and the only thing that shifted them was an engine run from the TFC Spitfire XIV….
