Quick Question – the Red Iraqi roundel which replaced the older Triangle one – is it used on the new aircraft – if yes is it on the wings – i have only seen the Flaq in most of the pics but not the roundel

    Thanks Gerard this is useful

Yefim Gordon’s new book Famous Russian Aircraft SU-24 pub by Crecy – includes A very interesting snippet on Pp 329-331 which caught my eye – Yefim states that India ordered the Fencer D version in the mid 80’s as a replacement for the Canberras and also envisaged it in a nuclear delivery role with requisite modifications and it was designated Su-24 MK – however in 1990 the order was cancelled . Not sure if anyone heard of this earlier – whether indeed the IAF had evaulated the SU-24 Fencer and actually placed orders for the same ?

SaJad Haider’s Flight of the Falcon is a brutally honest view on the PAF and Pakistan politics – a truly collector’s item and a fascinating insight

Any update on the JF-17 project – hope it didnt get mothballed 😀

There were 2 nice articles on JF-17 – one By Andrei Fomin in Take-off Magazine in 2010 for Zhuhai Air Show and the other a supplement by AFM – Air International also had a nice feature on the same

i have seen this roundel on a few web sites as Iraqi Af for 2006-9 – however a source tells me that these roundels were never actually used in service – has anyone seen this on an iraqi plane or any pictures to support this roundel as legitimate

Military aircraft Insignia of the World – John Cochrane/Stewart
    Crecy Publications
    GBP 14.95
    Pp 142

Books on aircraft roundels are very rare – almost none in the last 15 years .Hence this is a real labour of passion and it has taken almost 15 years since the publication of the first edition with the same name and by the same authors by Airlife – for a publisher to finally release an update on this exotic subject.

If ever you wondered on all the historical roundels for a particular country and where could you look it up – this is the one book which has it all.

Its In glorious full colour – and comprises around 142 Pp (the authors originally planned a detailed 2 volume which Crecy compressed into a single volume but the above cover is not fully correct as its no longer A-K – depicts all the latest roundels for all the countries including all the notable historical roundels for countries which no longer exist like Katanga , Biafra etc approx 500 + in all – the opening description of Afghanistan with around 9 historical roundels and a 2 Page history sets up a nice opening.

The new roundels include Abkhazia, Iraqi Air Force ,Chad ,Afghanistan etc – lots of new roundels are added .

However instead of diagrams and artwork profiles as in the earlier edition by Airlife – the updated edition features instead colour pictures (some are very tiny and unclear) – and the book loses one star as the diagrams in the previous edition also depicted the fin flashes which is missing and a real disappointment for me and i will need to retain the first edition due to the diagrams.

For some of the countries like South Sudan and Kurdistan , the authors state that the national flag is used – would have been appropriate to display the flag instead of keeping it blank . Another comment is that for all the roundels currently in service , the entry date is omitted .

    – Most of the text also could have done with an update from the first edition (example for India) and some of the navy roundels are also missing again .Some countries like Afghanistan, italy and Turkey are covered more comprehensively than others – though from personal research and i think there are more historical roundels for Bulgaria than shown.

i think the book could have done with another 50 Pp if the publisher had done more justice included more photographs or artwork profiles and the authors included diagrams to show the fin flashes . Also it should have been published in a bigger size like the first edition done by Airlife – nevertheless i am quite excited as its a long awaited update on this esoteric topic and a must buy.

see “last update ” for tje pages which are uploaded. It will take a very long time to complete it all. Sorry for that.

Gerard – the english version is very welcome – some amount of text will be even more appealing
