Just wondering if Tupolev Bombers is actually worth buying for folks like us who have WAPJ in which Tu22Mx was covered in WAPJ No 33and Tu-I60,Tu 142, Tu 16 have been well covered in IAPR – isnt it a cut paste of these articles ?

I found Yefim Gordon’s (Midland Pub) book on the Tu16/Tu 22 Mx quite good otherwise and Airtime has been known to reuse a lot of their stuff from WAPJ,WOF, IAPR and Combat Aircraft – the last book that I saw from them Superfighters was just a rehash of previous stuff with a few new photos – cmon Airtime you can do a lot better than regurgitating same old stuff.

Good news for Russian fans – After calling Airtime recently , Just came to know that the Russian Aviation Directory is finally coming out after all .

Airtime has now decided to issue this in 2 vols – vol1 on fighters/attack aircraft around 200 pages sometime in July 2004 and vol 2 end of the year . This is similar to the format which came out in Combat Aircraft a year ago .

Each vol will be priced at GBP 19.95 / US $ 35 – cheers !!

SOC – TO ANSWER YR QUESTION ON THE 5TH ISSUE – IT WAS DECIDED THAT THE SECOND ISSUE IT WOULD BE A SPECIAL ON THE US AIRWINGS – USAF, NAVY , MARINES, ANG , ARMY AVIATION ETC .

BUT SINCE THE US AIR POWER DIRECTORY BY KAMENSKII WAS DOING WELL AT THE TIME , AND THE CARRIER AVIATION DIRECTORY DID NOT DO SO WELL (i LOVED IT) IT WAS DECIDED TO DROP 5th ISSUE AND FOCUS ON BOOKS LIKE TUPOLEV’S BOMBERS ETC (REAL TRASH IF U BUY IAPR AND HAVE WAPJ)

    A REAL PITY !!:o

Good to see others are also interested in this book –

Butowskis book is long overdue – in one of my chats with Dan Murphy in end 2002 from Airtime Publishing he told me the book was completed but they were having problems with getting it printed (I think it gets done in Singapore) – a few months back Joy from AIrtime told me they were planning it for autumn of 2004 .

Anyway the layout , base maps , Squadron badges etc seems to be quite exciting and I look forward it – in the meantime Gordon & Dawes Russian AIr Power should suffice .

Would also recommend “Air War on the Edge” on the Aircraft and history of the IDF/AF which has just come out.

On Phil Camp & Simon Watson

I could not help noticing a few posts regrding the credentials of Simon Watson and Phil Camp – I have been in touch with Simon for last 2 years and his knowledge and photography of the IAF is really amazing – they come to India every once in a while to cover air exercises and have published their articles in all major magazines- their articles on the Mig 21 Moftu unit and kargil war are amazing.

They were to also come for Cope India this time – but apparently they got permission to attend for only 2 days – a pity we would have got some excellent photos and an unbiased report – may their tribe increase !!

U can also get easily from Midland Counties in UK or thru Amazon.com – IAPR vol 9 with the Mirage 2000 and Tu -16 Article is really great – not so much the Vol 10.

    Thanks a ton Flankerman .

Pity Airtime has cancelled their Russian Air Power Directory – reason non-availability of “special” paper whatever it means .

Looks like IAPR Vol 11 will do some justice for Russian AIr power.

I remember asking David Donald the new editor why they do not cover the Middle east AIr forces – Israel , Syria , Egypt etc (none in WAPJ or IAPR) and there was a defeaning silence –
I guess there is a lot less legwork involved in US and NATO air forces coverage – though Chinese/Indian Air Forces covered in IAPR have been good.

Would like to see some of the other East European Air forces also covered .
