So the information on the airfield/museum operator’s website quote in post 2 is wrong then?

Ford Advanced Vehicles were located at Slough trading Estate rather than the former Hawker site at Langley (which did become a Ford then Iveco truck plant in the early/mid 60’s).. both GT40s and Lolas were produced within sniffing distance of the Mars-Bar factory.. 🙂 the FAV site was just a typical industrial building, so doubt anything buried there..
the Hawker airfield site at Langley continued assembling/flying aeroplanes(Sea Furies) through the 50’s.. then was a research site for Hawker-Siddley, and at one time had a small nuclear reactor on site, used for training personnel involved with the nuclear submarine programme (reactor was later moved to Greenwich).. the airfield/factory site has been pretty significantly developed a couple of times since the mid 60’s, so i’d have thourght any underground storage would’ve come to light.. 😉

Last time I was up there, about this time last year, the Lightning was inside a fenced off compound belonging to a firm that sold MOD Surplus – Winchester Marine or something.. theres no fence in the the background of these shots, so I think those pictures are older than that – unless something has significantly changed since..

edit – just seen the video and you can see the fence in the background, so they either permission from the site owners or broke in..

Agreed – lovely brochure. Why the imposter on the front cover (nice pic btw)?

PS853 was one of the original Historic Aircraft Flight, and I believe will be featured with the BBMF on a couple of occasions this year..

I’ve got Sept 3 1954 issue of Aeroplane which is billed as the ‘British aircraft industry number’ – thats full of adverts and includes a trade directory.. look out for Aeroplane and Flights for that time of year as they normally both produced Farnborough specials.. also migh tbe worth a look out for Farnborough/SBAC catalogues ??

ref Rotax, in 1954 they are still listed as a seperate entity at an address in Wilesden junction

Interesting points all….our solution with our own aeroplanes is to restore them ourselves rather than pay someone else to do it – v. rewarding and I’m almost guaranteed not to rip myself off… though being a lawyer, it is always a possibility…:diablo:

going off topic here but, how does the certification side of things work (assuming youre not a licenced aircraft engineer in addition to a lawyer.. 😀 ).. presume you have to get someone in to sign off your work??

What about a guide at Old Warden who gave me hoplessy wrong infomation, that there was “nothing all that special about Comet Grovesnor House” that it had never been based at Hatfield as well as telling me various interwar bi planes were WW1 types! I have a pic of me peering (and not climbing in) to the lovely Hornet Moth (I want one) and him looking very hacked off!

    volunteers always welcome…

Whilst in this general area, here is shot recently received from my uncle. His staff car in Germany with BAFO post WWII.

A little beauty. I not exactly sure what it is but without research lean toward a Horch. Soon to be corrected by the knowledgeable I’m sure. 🙂
