dont get too hung up on the 737 comparision.. its wrong..

737 are MTOW of 50-60,000 Kg so are group 8, the smaller RJ’s are 30-40,000 so are group 7 and Sally B is 22680 so is group 6…

so the EU/Govt sets the minimum reqd level of 3rd party cover, the insurance companies then decide on the premium based on risk and charge accordingly, so it doesnt (probably) cost the same to insure a B17 as a commercial aircraft (if there is one) in the same catagory.. its like your car – insurance group stays the same but premuium for a 17 year old wont be the same as a 40 year old (unless they’re a 40 year old drunk driver maybe  )

I’ve no idea if the new minimum levels are reasonable or not.. as a layman it would seem excessive, but i’m not an expert… read the regs for yourself here.

Would a simple solution be to register the aircraft under what basically would be a flag of convenience ?

the way the regs read, it applies to foreign registered a/c operating in EU airspace as well… do a ‘google’ on 785/2004 and theres loads of links to the docs related to the new regs.. Neil.

Sorry if this sounds a little silly, I was just watching “The Dam Busters” on C4 and noticed that the crews who were going to be flying were only given bread and jam for their meals. One tried to get eggs and bacon but was shown to his bread and jam.

Why is this? Was it normal that WWII aircrew would only have a light meal before a mission?

No, the guy who only got bread n jam WASN’T aircrew, he said something like ‘i sort out your wages at the end of the month’ so was was ground/admin staff, the crew always got their ‘egg’.. 😉

If they’re gonna operate it at that MTOW it’ll fall in to group 8 which requires £239 million cover!! 😮 If Bae are covering the premium for that they’d better speed up the Typhoon deliveries.. 😉
