well I had a look in the local library and the place is mentioned in a couple of local history docs where they’ve recorded the memories of local people etc.. and there was a newspaper cutting from the local paper about the units reunion… basically all the info was that it was number 49 MU that was based there.. their job was to recover crashed a/c and wreckage and move it back to Faygate for removal of anything useful… of course the local paper went for the sensationist bit and went on about body parts found in the a/c etc… they must’ve recovered some large lumps of aircraft as there were memories of Queen Mary ‘low-loader’ trucks bringing the traffic to a standstill in Horsham as they made their way back to base…. i can’t see on the current site where any dump pit may’ve been, so i shall await the back copy of ‘after the battle’ to see if someone else has already been through this…

one of the other roles of the unit was to provide maintenance cover at Coolham, which was an ALG for Tangmere..

one of the other ‘memories’ of the place was the apparently awful ‘entertainment’ that was put on for the staff and locals by a travelling concert party – shades of ‘it aint arf hot mum’ in deepest Sussex…

yes the Shak did look and sound great… the contra-rotating props make a strange ‘clattering’ sound at low revs… may be my imagination but doesn’t sound as ‘loud’ as a Lanc… different engine i know but similar a/c config etc… I go to watch ‘Just Jane’ a few times a year and that seems noiser.. probably just my hearing/age..

Ewen – so was that you doing the headcount and trying to work out how the people selling the tickets were expecting you to squeeze 26 passengers on to one Rapide ?!! sorry, shouldn’t laugh, I think you sorted out everyone very well…
it was an excellent flight especially as we were up at the same time as the Prentice so got to see that in flight.

i’ve just read the postings about the probs with the Sea Vixen… I presume they must’ve pushed it undercover to carry out temp repairs…

I picked-up a Corgi Hunter that I hadn’t see before.. it was a polished’metal’ one and came in a fancy black presentation box type thing.. it was £14.50 and looks very nice on my bookcase thank-you very much!

yes I had an excellent day there… treated myself to a ride in one of the Rapides and picked-up a couple of Corgi models at sensible prices… thourght the crowd line was nice and close to the runway which was excellent when the DC-6’s were displaying… and the Noratlas and the Twin-Pin… one thing though, what happened to the Sea-Vixen… it was parked up when I went on the Rapide flight (10.30) but then seemed to have dissapeared?

Although called ‘RAF Faygate’ its not actually an airfield more a Maintenace Unit type set-up with the wrecks being delivered by road or rail..

I’m back down there tomorrow so will try and have a poke around in the local library.

this may be a bit bit modern but it was big and nosiy so thats good enough for me..

me, ATC Cadet on crowd line duties (getting in the way basically) at White Waltham Airshow in the mid 1970’s… next item listed in the show is a flypast by a BA VC10… next thing i know theres this VC10 doing a flypast , very fast, very low… very impressive… I nearly lost my beret!!! it looked ever more impressive as there is a slight rise in the ground between where i was standing and the display line…

another unexpected bonus was around the same time.. dad came from from work.. said that someone had told him there was some filming going on up at Bovingdon.. he drove us up there and there was a number (can’t remeber how many now) of B-25s parked up for the filming of Hanover Street (naff film).. no guards nothing, we just walked around stood underneath the a/c, took pictures etc.. those were the days!

for anyone up here in Lincs, there is a showing of The Dambusters
on 18th May at The Kinema In The Woods in Woodhall Spa

The ad in the local paper also lists ‘time related support films and music from the compton organ’ !!! not sure about the music bit
but the Kinema In The Woods is always worth a visit itself.. and of course theres the 617 Sq memorial and Petworth Hotel in the
    village…

link for the Kinema is http://www.thekinemainthewoods.co.uk
