Could be Ia, IIa or Va….

You’ve got a nice one there, well done 🙂

As an aside, does anybody know if the outer safety surround was originally finished in red back in the day? or would it have just been the gun button finished in said colour? Cheers.

They’re also awaiting a new hangar as the last one got badly mauled by the recent hurricane. AFAIK the aircraft survived ok.

Following on from what Mike J said, Gary Larkins and his team also recovered sections of an Early B-17 including a complete tail section from a lake or river, not to mention a Lend/Lease P-39 which ditched in a lake in Canada on its way to Russia, though I had heard that the Canadians were loathe to let it cross the border to the US post-recovery.

    There’s also:

The Wildcat recovered from the lake in Northern Ireland

IL-2 recovered from Lake Balaton in Hungary

The only ones can think of are:

    1) BW-372 Finnish Brewster Buffalo

    2) HAC’s Yak-1

    3) Long nose 190 now with the DTM Berlin

    4) 109G now in the Polish museum

    5) numerous 109’s from the Murmansk area

    6) Hurri Z5252 from the same area

    7) Thunderbolt from the lake in Austria now in California

    8) Numerous B-17s and Lancs dragged out of the Swiss lakes and unceremoniously scrapped soon after

    Paul,

You’ll find that it’s not listed as a ‘P’ but as a ‘U’ model, it was only when it arrived at Booker that we deduced that it was in fact a completely different model, the ‘U’ having some surfaces skinned in Ply and the ‘P’ being built for longevity in the postwar years as opposed to the mass numbers/short life thinking behind the WWII production of the ‘U’ model so it used an all metal construction to stave off the woodworm 😉

What abaut MH434? I have heard that she could be pushed more after she was rebuilt.

I think you’ll find that most freshly rebuilt Spits can be ‘Pushed’ more due to having new non-magnesium rivets fitted, as used during manufacture/repair in WWII, as they have a tendendcy to ‘pop’ after a few years of such ‘pushing’ 😉

Is there any high performance spits flying today, more power, lighter than stock??

The only ones I can think of are Charles Church’s EE606 and also AB910 when ACM Wheeler owned her. Both were fitted with four-bladed props and EE606 had clipped wings, not sure about AB910s guise when it was used for racing post-war, or what engines they used, was ‘606 using a 35?

The fighter jockeys who used to fly the “clipped, clapped and cropped” LFVbs used to say they’d outperform just about anything at low/medium level in a dogfight, I recall one story of a MKXIV getting trounced by an LFVb in a mock-dogfight but I’m assuming that the straight-line speed wasn’t as good, say as a Tempest, seing as they weren’t used against the V1s.

    Right, where to start…

David, as Scotavia mentioned, we were not the only ones taking photos, there were at least 3 or 4 others with cameras, not to mention the people with camera phones  The funny thing is that we hadn’t said a word about it before it arrived, then the day before it was scheduled to be delivered a spotter on the gate calmly asked one of us “..when is the Yak-9 turning up?” I have a feeling they have good contacts in UK Customs….

GliderSpit – We’re hoping to start engine runs in a few months, got to get that bearer first before we can even think about dates.

    T6flyer – The Harvard is FH153/G-BBHK.

mike – Bizzarely enough it’s easier to find a 10″ tyre than a 10 1/4″ as many of the Biz Jets use a 10″ tyre on the Nosewheel, only problem is that you can’t get a plain tyre as would’ve been fitted in service, hubs are a different story though, the words ‘hens teeth’ spring to mind though the 10 1/4″ hubs aren’t exactly common nowadays.

Thanks for the feedback everyone and the kind comments Daz 🙂

Thanks for the info Chris, very interesting as I had started reading up on the subject after reading a short article in FP some time ago, unfortunately the book I bought seems to have gone awol.

Recently read the Crowood book on the A-26 and this piece had been reproduced in the book, very interesting as I’d never heard of anything resembling a SAM other than the Wasserfall. Have a look at this page:

…and scroll down until you find the following story:

She’s currently in storage in southern England after changing hands earlier this year. No plans have been made on a restoration as yet AFAIK.

I took this shot at the weekend, looks like the runways are being spared, for the moment, after looking at an overhead shot.
Still no news on a buyer for the non-agricultural land and buildings though.

The Woodford Lanc is still with Kermit at Fantasy of Flight in numerous containers, very much on the back-burner.

The Mossie at AvSpecs is a new build from Glynn Powell’s beautiful fuselage molds, a real labour of love. It is based on the remains of KA114 found in Canada.

The story of Glynn’s bid to get more Mossie’s where they belong can be found here:

I’m not sure if they produced any, I know they were refurbing a number recently and that there was talk of having to produce some for the Weizmann Black Spit if replacements couldn’t be sourced, as the ones that were from the aircraft were somewhat past it.

The Problem really lies with the tyres and tubes though as Fluffy has pointed out (sorry for going slightly off-topic). Have any tyre companies got moulds/tooling for the 10.25 x 7.5 tubes in store? As I’d think it would be cheaper to commission a set of tubes than a set of hubs for the fleet of later Spits around the world. I seem to remember the Boss telling me of the steep price that was paid for the set of hubs for the MKI which are soon to be removed, they weren’t cheap.

Makes me kind of glad that AR will be fitted with 10″ wheels in some ways though what we do with the later marque Spits in the pipeline is another matter.

Who was it who made the new batch of 10 1/4″ hubs a few years back? Was it Microscan? or a company who are still in existence? Just wondering who would take the job on.
