My condolences to the family, Paul will be sorely missed.
Myself and many others who have replied to this thread first cut their teeth on the old Warbirds Worldwide forum, Paul was always helpful to us young ‘whipper-snappers’ cluttering up the board with over-enthusiastic posts about when this or that was due to fly etc. Blue skies and as he always said, Keep ’em flying…..

Thanks Michael, just what I was after!

I saw ‘972 a few weeks ago and apart from the fin having to be rebuilt she is looking good for assembly and engine runs later on this year, all the systems are currently being refitted to the fuselage and the engine is back in, we MIGHT see her fly yet!

There are at least 3 Centaurus engined Furies/Sea Furies on the N reg, Ellsworth Getchell flies his from Ione/Hollister and has done for many years. If i recall correctly Gerry Yagen’s example also uses Bristol power.

The Lightning has been moved to a new home in Cumbria, it went by road a week ago, all due to BA wanting it shifting or they would “scrap it”.

Amongst others, Blenheims mainly until ’41 when the first few RAF B-17s started operating out of there (mostly on trials). B-25s and then 100 group Mossies and Beaus until the CFE moved in with many interesting types, including captured Luftwaffe aircraft. Some of the old boys I know have some cracking stories to tell of those times in the neighbourhood.

I’m told that most of the southerly end of the airfield is now sold, I’d love to see the place come alive again as I grew up but a mile or so from there and seeing it stagnant for so long was a tad sickening.

Here’s a pic of ‘BSMD’ prior to departure on the flight ZRX61 mentioned. There was more than a little ‘artistic’ writing in that article 😉

Hello Pat,
If the hangar doors are open (evenings/weekends are sometimes best) take a trip up to Stead, I’m unsure if Rare Bear is still hangared on the field but John Marlin’s MB.5 look-alike is around there somewhere. I’d also recommend a trip to Carson City which isn’t far out of ‘Town’. Jim Wickersham imports and maintains new-build Yak-9s on the airfield and there’s also a few Grumman Albatrosses around too probably, and a Mustang or two are based there. Have fun, I loved Nevada.

Still at Weald Mark 😉

Where did he get that hat? 😉 Pikehouse strikes again…..
They also had lots of technical troubles when the P-47 started being used from England just like the P-51 and P-38.
A now deceased ‘Jug’ pilot once told me that conditions were so different to those encountered in the States that the pilots themselves just weren’t used to seeing such weather as we have here in glorious Blighty 😉 Atcham was the base used to get the green pilots used to the ETO and the methods to use, some came over with no idea how to fly on instruments, not great considering the few days of clear weather we have every year!
I agree with Moggy about the use of the ‘Boom and Zoom’ attack, the P-47 was no dogfighter as many Spit jockeys found out in ‘play fights’ over England, many ending up with a wrecked ‘Jug’ in a hole in the ground.

Thanks for clearing that up Baldeagle, from what is said about the aircraft on the site you are right about it being authentic, rotary engine, guns and finish, superb! would be a great addition to any collection. I volunteer to walk the wingtip! 😉

So I heard, will need a lot of work after sitting outside most of her life.

AFAIK the spit in question for the IL 2 swap is the F.21 in store with the RAFM, I last saw the wings at Cosford some time ago, don’t know where it lives now, Stafford? Would be nice to see one of the late late Spits and compare the wing shapes, the IL 2 is coming along nicely too, fuselage is looking much more complete now, even though it’s being finished as static the workmanship is even better than the original Russian work, no wonder we’ll never see one fly on the G reg 😉
