Well the Mrs and I both thoroughly enjoyed it and as many others have already said it really brought a tear to the eye, thought provoking and really quite immersing for an hour and a half of TV. The first op scene really brought it home about the panic these lads must have been in on such occasions.
When the filming was underway the Director remarked that ten years ago this would have been a multi million pound budget and that now it was all being done for a few hundred thousand.
Which brings me on to my next point, before watching this I decided to watch ‘The Great Raid’, a great example of why multi-million budgets are not commonplace at present, if this was received as poorly in the box office as it was by me it is not surprising that the big Production Companies are not able to spend vast amounts, simply awful.
But I have to say thank you to Geoff for a wonderful story, very well brought across on the Beeb’s screen.

BTZE’s wing is now fitted, it will soon be time for engine runs, for more info please have a look at:

If anybody is wondering which ‘flyer’ was used during the filming I’ve just updated the website with a bit more info and some photos:

Hello VoyTech,
All I have thus far is that it was applied by students of a Technical Institute at Monino for a parade in 1951 trying to replicate a GPW VVS fighter scheme so it could well have been flown over Red Square for a Communist holiday parade as you suggest. I hope to find out more about the aircraft in question in the near future.

John – yes the Backplate was included and yes it was definitely 25″ long, they do vary depending upon where the tip of the spun dome has been plugged I’ve noticed in the past.
Tom
Just put a tape on one here and it’s 25″ Dia by 25″ long as near as dammit.

The digit you’re looking for would be ‘3’ 😉

Very interesting story, thanks for bringing it to light 🙂

Tom Neil’s ‘Gun Button To Fire’
Loved it when I first read it over a decade ago, well overdue a re-read 😉

I’ve added BTZE to the list, quite a comprehensive list and interesting to note that BZMY is only two “down the line” so to speak.

The new shots for the fighter squadron visit were filmed at Halton, the production company were adamant that they should have a Spit and Hurri even though they were strongly advised against it…
Overlooking all that it was a great day and the weather couldn’t have been better after a very gloomy start, I certainly enjoyed jumping in to BM597 in Charlie’s place for the ‘scramble’ scene 😉
The C-47 interior scenes were filmed at Baginton while N1944A was having her engine replaced and there were some parts where a mock-up was used.
Shame they didn’t have the budget to use the CAF LB-30 but there we go, keeps us employed.
Really enjoyed the programme, a great follow-up to ‘The Gathering Storm’ with some great performances, hence why it’s been Emmy nominated, hope the Beeb show them both back-to-back soon!

Hello Andy and galdri,
I hadn’t thought of that, both could very well have been stuck in the same jail when ‘borrowed’ by the Luftwaffe.
Tom
So it’s not a bomber, possibly has a 2-man (or more) crew, the only likely types I can think of which would have been operating near/over France would be:
Army Co Op Lysanders – not completely sure they were 2-men operated or even used this late over the continent
ASR Walrus
Recco Blenheim
Beaufort
Any thoughts folks?
Tom
She looks superb lads, as does all the detail, especially seeing as she’s a flyer! I hope he likes his new toy 😉 and it’s great to see her finished, that prop looks spot on too considering that most RC flyers usually can’t quite replicate the look of the full-sized unit. Time for a beer and a rest now I should think!
Tom
Don’t think it’s Typhoon/Tempest looking at my reference photos, one of which is below:

I don’t have anything on the prop control but if you have a look through the gallery link below I uploaded a shot of the restored TR9.D controller:
