Nice work Gary. Did the Hind clip the tops of the trees as it came into land after it’s display? I was up at the other end at the time, but it did seem to clip the tops. Was this just the downdraught? Anyone confirm?

When I marshalled Chris in after his flight there wasn’t any leaves or wood trailing behind so i’d say just downdraught.

I saw G-ACSS at Old Warden three weeks ago and, yes, the intention is to fly her again. Engines were stripped down as was much of the fuselage, but with so many projects requiring attention, I guess Shuttleworth engineers have got their work cut out. The Spitfire is currently engineless, with its Merlin being overhauled and the SE-5A is almost unrecognisable, being stripped back to basics. They are rebuilding a Fieseler Storch and the Gladiator and Lysander have only just reflown again, so I guess that the Comet just has to wait its turn!

Right on nearly all counts, the Collection is not restoring PH’s Fieseler, this is being done by an engineer solely funded by PH. The spit has gone a few steps past just engine out, the wings and tail are now seperate, with lots of lovely N.D.T. to be carried out, before thoughts of reassembly.

Was actually there when he set the record very early morning and there was vast quantities of Red Bull in evidence, not for the driver just for everyone else.
It was very impressive to see and hear but what you don’t see is the state of Graham’s tyres at the end he was called in before he set the record to have them looked at as they were disintergrating very rapidly. 😮
Still what a record to set and one hell of a machine, the rest of Dick Moss’s restorations have all been beautiful seen most of them in parts in my uncles workshop having the paint applied. Lovely cars.:D

If neither of these have been made airworthy in the last 30 years, then they might just as well use them for spares?

As Yak 11 fan correctly observed this is the statement I count as rude, you could have said ‘they haven’t been airworthy for 30 years and he may have spares’, also surely a pm containing the contact details would be better than just posting for all to see, maybe you know Mr Pierce and he didn’t mind but I would if it was me.

    Steve.

Albert have you contacted the owner of these aircraft before making such a rude statement, if the aircraft are in storage pending restoration/what have you then surely they are better to be kept intact and not plundered by people who don’t think except out loud.

Quite a few years ago this aircraft turned up at Shuttleworth for a show in company with a very nice Stearman, after the show had ended I helped to picket them down and the pilot showed me what the ammo storage was used for now, eight cans of lager a side, now thats a great idea, how much could we get in the aux tank on the Lizzie? 🙂

On the same subject I was looking at the version of the RAFM catalogue that I purchased on my visit of 5/1/89 (I have not invested in a new one since!) and it says this about their Sopwith Pup replica “The aircraft exhibited was built, making use of extensive original Pup components, by Lieutenant Commander St Cyrien over a number of years… and is the most authentic Pup in existence”. Yet this does not seem to count as a survivor by accepted criteria whilst a converted ex-2 seat civilian version does. Views?[/QUOTE]

The Pup/Dove was built as a Pup then converted on the assembly line to a Dove by Sopwith, then converted back to a Pup in the 30’s, i’d say there is enough original after reprotecting a heck of a load of very old wood during the recover the other year. 🙂

What is the problem with the paint scheme? Its the owners choice how he paints it, he paid for it. If it was your warbird you could choose what scheme it wore.

Ollie for once you have said something I totally agree with, 😮 Keep it up. shouldn’t someone with a huge knowledge of paint schemes and the ability to be rude about peoples work have commented yet?

P.s. looks great, keep up the great work hope to see it in the flesh soon.

Last time I saw it the Arrow Active was rather short of polished aluminium too. Perhaps you’re thinking of the Blackburn B2?

When I used to look after the Active, there was plenty of polishing to do on all the brass surrounds of the instruments and the venturi, lots of polishing on the mahogany? panel but never much you could see outside of the cockpit. Shame would love to see her back at old Warden 🙁 At this time of year the Active and Mewgull always looked festive too 😀

Just had another quick search and found a site on DGA 4 and DGA 5’s so it is one, obviously the other site was confused? Was the reg used again?

Hi, what is the small 1930’s racer I searched on google and the reg N241Y belongs to a DGA-4 built 1946 and it claims to be a 5 seater so obviously not the same aircraft, so what is it?

    Cheers Steve.

    Thanks Chris – I did wonder…

Mind you one of the Utt Butt girls arrived through the main gate with her boyfriend, beleive me – they ain’t all glamourous, she looked like she’d been the unfortunate victim of a bird strike – boyfriend’s brain overcooked when conversation was attempted, they seemed v well suited and were both bloody rude.

    TT

I also experienced said girl as I had pulled over in the main gate to see it locked up and as I tried to back out she charged down my blind side to get in realised it was locked and raced off. Not too bad but driving a ww2 ambulance with limited visiblity she was lucky not to be squashed. 😮

I haven’t had a chance to thank you for all your help to get me and my girlfriend in at the airshow, thankyou it was a great day.

    Steve (why be formal?)

Speaking to Chris Morris a couple of years ago, he already told me the Gladiator would be next for repainting, therefore I am very surprised that funds were diverted to repaint the Tiger Moth, which was accurately painted in RAF camouflage and I thought in good condition, not needing a repaint. Obviously the collection don’t need funds to repaint aircraft that need it, when they can’t afford to repaint aircraft that don’t!
I am not alone in hating to see our only airworthy Gladiator flying in false Norwegian colours as I know others have written to the Collection about this. Hey, ho, one day…. 😮

Hello Albert I was Christened Steven or is this not the formality to which you refer?
The tiger moth was in need of a complete survey and it was far easier to remove the 20 odd year old fabric to do this than not. It has been far more than a repaint I can assure you, it was a complete strip to bare metal but as you say you hadn’t realised this. So I can understand your comments about expense but it had to be done. Some of our in house photographers may have pictures of this work? If not it has been reported in propswing the in-house magazine of the SVAS which if you were a member would have been sent to you, I highly recommed joining as it keeps you up to speed and you have great benifits for only £22 details to be found at http://www.shuttleworth.org.
The Collection always needs funds especially with this autumnal weather affecting the airshows.
Any paint scheme the Glad will wear is ‘inaccurate’ as we know it was L8032, but service history is still unclear unless you know different?
Hopefully this satisfies your painting queue questions but the glad will probally be ‘next’ for a few years to come.

Regards Steven Panter (These views are my own and not the views of the Shuttleworth Collection or the SVAS).

Hello Mister Ross as Wessex boy stated my name is P A N T E R not painter, only a little niggle but i’ve had 25 years of correcting people and as you appear to like everything perfect, you could start with reading things fully please.
The paint scheme was researched properly, in fact, after your comments pertaining the Tutor it was consistantly checked through out the rebuild. Unfortunatley I am sorry but the Tutor scheme was discussed when I started at Old Warden 10 years ago at the time of the Gladiator repaint and your pictures although a help were not the sole reference material.

I have seen your pictures and in my eye I am happy to state that the top deck of the Tutor should be Green as was an airframe mechanic from the original team when he saw the repainted airframe, proof enough for me.
I would like to point out these are my personal views and nothing to do with the collection or SVAS.

If the Gladiator’s paint scheme is ‘awful’ then please by all means direct some funds towards the collection asking them to repaint it, unfortunatley both time and space are at a premium in the hangars at present so i’d rather see it fly than be pulled because someone doesn’t like the scheme. It is a historic scheme and it shows that there were other airforces involved in the second world war and so educates people which is the aim of the Collection.

I hope you do not see this as a personal attack as I am only trying to let you know that paint is not slapped willy-nilly on the aircraft, much thought does go into it.

    Regards Steven Panter.
