The Airbus aircraft I have worked on, the engine covers stay with the aircraft.

The airline I work for and another I handle, take the covers and the box they come in, off the aircraft to save weight. Airlines only fit the covers to the engines and pitot heads when the aircraft are in long term store (More than a week) The ones you have been seeing fitted ARE brand new!

Cranfield have a 146 in place of ‘Snoopy’ these days !!

So thats why the are using a Dornier then! The crew of the 146 are all off sick with asthma!
    Who’s Dornier is it?

Remember when we had a Herculese that used to do that? When Mount St Helens erupted “Snoopy” was flying into the plume within days!

Here is a more modern Dzus key for the same purpose…

    Modern = I was issued it in 1972 😀
Along with the Canberra door key I also still have LOL

I had one of them once. Absolutly useless!!!!!! Best to use a GS screw driver (GS = General Standard)

Ok, I know that if you fly through a dense ash cloud you ruin your engines, and the paint and the windshield doesn’t like it either.

Block the pitot heads (Air France A330 loss)
Block the static pressure system (Turkish 757 loss)
Contaminate the fuel system (Numerous losses over the years)
Contaminate the cabin pressurization system (Passenger and crew health concerns)
Block the air conditioning system (No losses but the pax will freeze)
Contaminate all the external lubricated hinge points (Long term bearing wear)
    The list goes on
I like the conspiracy theory though!!!

Does anyone think the authorities have over-reacted in this case?

I don’t know, but having seen the F-18 pictures I think that something had to be done as a precaution. What I am surprized at is the speed it happened. I was at work till 01:00 on the Thursday and nothing had been mentioned at all. My wife woke me at 07:00ish and said that there was some disruption. It all went from there.

They won’t get to far with a choked carburettor, scoured cylinder bores, frosted windscreens and blocked pitot static systems!. Thank go the British have a strong ship building industry!

Yes it was strange to see the Boscombe circuit empty for the last 2 days.
I was quite surprised the Tutors were not flying, and I have not heard much GA today, has somebody in authority decided that the ash particles are small enough to get through a piston engine air filter ??

It might effect the pitot static systems,so keep them all on the ground.

    Just saw this in “Flight”

    http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/2010/04/16/340727/pictures-finnish-f-18-engine-check-reveals-effects-of-volcanic.html

Whilst they didn’t boroscope the engine BEFORE it flew through the debris so they dont know if this was there before, it is still quiet sobering.

    Train spotting anyone?
