What i have seen appears to be some sort of rope affair, in a ‘figure of 8’ style about half way up the blade. Very simple and nothing like what i have!

Ah! The “proper” one might have been a pain to fit so the jolly jack tars might have just used a bit of rope.
There is an official “Gag” to stop the RB211’s windmilling. We use a chock!:D
(Making a suitable entry in the tech log of course)

You slide them onto the blades and it stops them being blown around by the wind (“Windmilling”)
The mamba is a free turbine engine and all free turbine engines will windmill in a strong breeze. On the deck of a carrier there will always be a breeze.

It’s not blue so it’s not from the bogs. How did he keep it to show the press, in the freezer? Good job it wasn’t from the bogs then!!!

It must have been a slow news day. Every aircraft engineer I know has done this. You get a nice bag that “Clinks” as you get off!

Well as long as you take it up, I’m perfectly willing to have a go at bringing it back down. I suspect you will however quickly change your mind on what constitutes an “uncontrolled landing”… ;):p

An hour on “Flightsim 98” convinced me there was a reason why God made me an engineer!!! 😀

What a singularly uninformed and alarmist comment.

Each and every day, all around the world, hundreds of sectors are flown without incident in the A330.

Symon’s point about the Tristar is a good one.

Well said. The A330 is as safe as any other aircraft.

does the A330 even have crew rest areas?

They will have rest areas on such a long flight. It might be a few seats in the cabin or a dedicated rest area. It will depends on what the airline have fitted.

There is some suggestion that Captain Marc Dubios was asleep in his bunk and that the two F/Os were actually flying at the time.

    Where was that recorded?
The F/O’s are as trained as the captain so the fact that they were driving has no bearing on the accident
Getting the CVR and the ADR back is essential. The wreckage is going to the difficult one and might not tell them to much, sadly.

I cannot think of another fin on an aeroplane, that’s why it winds me up!
I must also admit I’d had an extra glass of red wine when I wrote that:o

    Steve
The A330 is large, threfore is bigger than an elephant. So to the gutter press it’s a “Jumbo jet” It’s the same as any one who uses a computer is a “Computer nerd” Or any one who goes to church is a religious fanatic.
Virgin blue operate aeroplanes. They must be big. So they are “Jumbo jets”. Elephants sort of look like pigs and Virgin’s first big record was “Tubular bells” so if we have listened to Mike Oldfield we are all going to DIE!!!

    Good point, well made
Boeing makes a special point of giving it a special name. Boeing didn’t call it a dorsaltailfin though:D

Carrying on from the AF447 thread,

I’m not convinced a data dump from the CVR would be possible as the voice files would be very large.

However, dumping FDS data should be a relatively easy task.

The next generation of aircraft will transmit loads of parameters real time to the ground. There will be an FRD as a back up and the CVR will remain on board to capture the last 30 minutes of voice. The pilots unions will not allow people to listen in to their conversation live. Would you like your management listening in to you all day at work?

Can any of the Pilots here she light on these messages? This apparently is the ACARS message log from AF447, sent to me from a trusted friend.

    Hi all
Pilots won’t help you hear, that’s a maintenance print out!

ATA/PH = ATA chapter that the warning is covered in
/PH = flight phase. flight phase 6 cruise
Typ = type of event WRN = warning
Sel = warning, date and time
The next bit is a fault code that you put into AIRNAV (Airbus fault isolation manual) to help with fault finding
Date = don’t know that one, failed CSE French
    Novo = flight number
The right hand side of the print out has been cut off
    .
(This should be read from the bottom of the top page upwards and then from the bottom of bottom page upwards). The first failures were from a previous sector. The first two messages on this sector are concerned with a toilet problem! Oooo quick, conspiracy theory’s away!!!
Looking at it, a lot happened at 0210hrs and at 0214 was the last report shown.

    P.S. I’ve got a PPrune of a friend too!!
