What good would knowing the exact nature of the technical problem have done?
I should imagine that the reason why none of the ground staff knew what was wrong with the aircraft was that the engineers were sweating blood out on the ramp trying to fix it and were to busy to tell them.
Mind you ground staff are not aversed to claiming a “technical” problem when it’s their computer system or eaven the baggage belt breaking down!

Pretty much what I will be looking for in 12 months time!
Shame about the timing and the location of where I am at the moment!
Timing: Keep your eyes and ears open in about six months about six months then, I’ll keep my ear to the ground too!
Location: You have to move down there, big deal. If you were going to Uni or joining the RAF you would have to move anyway.
Did you see my post on the Monarch apprenticeships three days ago? They do apprenticeships every now and again at Luton. If you drop them a line they might be able to tell you if they plan to run one next year.
Good luck and keep us informed!

Agreed, the ATC is an excellent addition to the videos that’s for sure. So me being unfamiliar with situations like this what would happen to the engine? lengthy repair or entire replacement of the engine?
With a bird strike it depends on were the bird has gone. If there is evidence of the bird going down the core the MINIMUM you would do is a boroscope inspection of the compressor. Looking at the video of this one I suspect that the birds have gone down the core and have damaged the compressor. The puffs of flame sugest to me that the engine was surging (stalling) this can be caused by a disturbance of the airflow through the compressor, i.e bent and broken blades.
Any repairs to the inside of the engine requires requires an input to the engine overhaul workshop, so the engine will be changed. (It’s quicker) In fact I would be surprised if that aircraft is not back in the air already!

Where is the APU on the BAE-146? I always hear this loud noise coming from the undercarriage when im boarding one of these.
The APU on the 146/RJ is in the tail just forward of the air brakes.
The noise you hear from the main gear is from the brake cooling fans. The 146have them. They are an option on the A320 and the A330.
The APU as already stated provides electrical and pneumatic power to the aircraft. If it is U/S they have to provide electrical power and an airstart (an APU on a lorry) to start an engine at the gate. The aircraft is then pushed back onto the taxi way and the other engine is throttled up to provide the pnuematic pressure to turn the other engine.
When the aircraft is on stand the airlines do not like the APU being run because it costs a lot of money. The airlines prefer the aircraft to go onto the fixed electrical power provided by the airport.
If you want to hear a noisy APU go listen to an EMB-145! Those dreadful little piles of C*** give you a head ache if they are parked two stands away!

Nice to meet you too Grey! Although I must say you don’t look much like your picture!
I had a very plesent morning at the AVP. Met some nice people too, most of them from a flight sim forum. They all strted talking about giggley bites and duel core thingies and lost me!
We must do it again, perhaps a late summer BBQ, a few beers and a doze in the sun?
Thanks to Neil for organizing it.

Had a quick look at the 737 SRM this morning (06:15!) Whilst there are standard repairs for cracks eminating from some of the window corners there isn’t one for the area shown on J.T’s 707. BUT…… on the 737-3/4/500’s there is an 1/8″ doubler of almost the same shape on the inside of the skin! My guess is that there was a comon problem on the 707’s with cracking in that area and they beefed up the 737 structure to prevent it.
I wonder if the same area on the other side of the aircraft has that repair aswell?

No problem Luckylad!
The 707,727 &737 all share the same nose. The nose design goes back to the KC-135, that is the reason for the eyebrow windows. They are there so that a KC-135 pilot can keep station with a refueling aircraft. Boeing just left them in for the comercial aircraft! Boeing don’t like to change things if it works. In fact the early drawings of the 757 showed it with the same nose. The 707,727,737 & 757 share the same fuselage cross section and basic design principles. If you realy dig deep into the aircraft the pilot’s ashtray assembly in the 767 is the same type as the B-29’s!!!. (I must get out more)

In addition to the foregoing observations, I noticed the name has two ‘t’ s.
Perhaps that is how the Aussies spell it but, I would have thought with their English ancestery they would have stuck to one.
His Son is called Jett and his daugter is called Ella. The old softie!!!!
Whiskey Delta. That patch looks worse in your picture! I’m in work tomorrow, I’ll have a look in the 737 SRM to see if there is a standard repair for a crack or something.
BEFORE anybody says anything, I’m not saying that there is anything wrong with the aircraft, or having a “go” at Mr Travolta, or his aircraft, or its maintenance. It’s just in twenty odd years of operating 737’s I’ve never seen a patch there, thats all.

So thats six of us……
Come on guys! Neil has put in a lot of effort to get ZK on display at Manchester lets try and support him!
I’m going to rock up at about 11 o’clock(ish) so be there or be square!

I’d go with the slide armed flag across the door window when the slide is obviously not armed too.
Also the door is opened and there are no steps under it, a hanging offence if I were in charge.
Notice the nasty little “Scab patch” above the “Eyebrow” window above his head.Never seen one there before.
Never mind. Give the guy his due he has preserved something other than a Mustang or Spitfire.

O.K Neil I’m up for a forum meet. What time and how will I recognise you?;)

There is the Romper pub on the lane to the AVP. Good food and good ale. I was carried out of there once! (I managed to crawl the other times!)
Rgds Cking
I think that buses 18 and 20 both go to cargo centre from Airport Bus Station. From there, I always walk back towards the main road and walk along the footpath which takes you to the lane up to AVP. There may be short-cut that the locals may know, though.
The short cut is as follows:
Insted of walking back towards the perimeter road, walk awy from it towards the MYT hangar. As the road turns left, towards the security gate there is a road to your right that leads to the Romper Pub. Walk up this road and the AVP is sign posted from there. If you get horribly lost just ask for the Romper, sod the aircraft have a meal and a beer!!

Hi,
Just found these on RingwayReports, http://www.ringwayreports.co.uk
“New Singapore freight carrier Jett8 Airlines Cargo announces intention to serve Manchester twice weekly with Boeing 747-200F equipment from Wednesday 25/4/07… “
and
“Saudi Arabian Airlines to fly Jeddah > Geneva > Manchester once weekly with Boeing 777-200s effective Friday 22/6/07… “
Cheers,
Sam
Ths last thing I heard was that the Saudi flight was going to be TWICE weekly. It might have all changed though!!!:)
Jett8 and Great wall airlines(!?) have been looking for people to handle them for the past few months, both operating 747-200’s.

Notice the brakes fitted to the nose wheels of the 727 in the second shot. There aint many aircraft with them fitted!
