We too found the windbreak and stepladder brigades frustrating, especially my 8-year-old son as he couldnt see over the top. We eventually moved our chairs to the back of the crowd and stood on them, which was effective if a little uncomfortable as fold-up chairs arent really meant to be stood on. At least we had a clear conscience about not blocking anyones view.

I think part of the problem is that there are simply an awful lot of people for a fairly limited amount of viewing area once the corporate tents etc are accounted for, and the fact that the ground is flat makes it hard to see over the top. Maybe some temporary grandstands would help, or even some earth banks where there is room.

I also think its an expensive day out, for me, my son, a programme, flightline walk, ice creams and food on the way home it came to over £65 and i’m not sure I’d spend that every year. The last time I went was about 3-4 years ago and I’m sure it was ‘only’ £15 then.

I was also there on Saturday with my 8-year-old son, and also haven’t posted any photos because I’m not happy with any of mine and there are already plenty of better ones to be seen.

I’ve not been for a couple of years, but it was every bit as good as I remembered, apart from the poor weather in the morning and early afternoon. We stood between the American and Tank museums and had the benefit of several of the planes idling just in front of us as they awaited their turn.

I also thought the ground running Merlins were superb, but they were too loud for my son so we moved on.

As for Janie, I saw a Mustang fly over just south of Norwich heading southeast at about 5pm today (Sunday), which I would think is too early for one of the planes from the Balbo, so I was wondering if it was her  . I couldnt get a clear look but it was mostly silver with d-day invasion stripes on the wings, I couldnt see the nose or tail colours though.

Superb photos – thankyou very much 🙂 I’ll show them to him tonight

He’s just finished his first Airfix kit, of a Hurricane, albeit with a lot of help from me and wants a Mustang next. Its obviously a case of ‘like father, like son’ because I started making Airfix kits at about his age and they were the cause of my interest in aviation too.

Thanks ! I’ll follow those up and see what I can find.

We live about an hour from Duxford – thats where we bought the model that started this search for more information 🙂 Weather permitting, I’m taking him to the Flying Legends this year so he can see some in the air as well.
