π
Distiller,
You must be aware of the rule regarding FC-1 – “If a component is unknown, it is surely the best in the world” π
PAF has some 32 F-16 block 15 which are also going to be given MLU.
Tee it high and let ’em fly. India should go for broke and test out the so called “strategic” ties with the US. The worst that can happen is that they say no.
should weight in at around $4bil counting spares, training and munitions.
They need to produce Osama or mulla omar to have Unkil pickup the full tab on this one.
Unkil is not going to pick up the tab. BTW your numbers may be on the low side. I estimate it will be closer to 5 billion easily.
BTW, I had mentioned on April 14 that Pakistan was asking for a two-part deal with initial delivery from USAF reserves. Chalk up the third straight correct prediction for GA.
Stupid question, but what is the difference in price between a block 50/52 and a block 60?
Night and day
SOC,
Can you compare what the US did to Saddam versus the tapdance it is doing with Kim Jong-Il?
Iran has no legal right to nuclear weapons, since they signed the NPT as a non-nuclear country.
That said, given what the US did to Iraq, Iranian leaders are smart to try and develop nukes. Having nukes = US will chicken out.
American war for “freedom and democracy” is restricted to non-nuclear enemies. With nukes, enemy can even become “Major Non-NATO Ally” π
SOC,
The $100B figure is expected to hit at the end of this year or middle next financial year. He has been in charge for 6 years or will be 6.5 at ETA. The claimed figures versus actuals fit like a glove. Where is the great discrepancy?
Fits like a glove? Let’s see:
http://www.finance.gov.pk/survey/chapters/01-Growth.pdf
Above is the official Pakistan government economic survey site. It says Pakistan has had a real GDP growth rate of 3.1%, 5.1% and 6.4% in the last 3 fiscals. How do they average to 7%? π
I really dont want to get into a childhood math contest with anyone explaining slight variations between actuals and stated expectations.
That is because you know your numbers are bogus. Can you say 1+1=5 and then say it’s only a “slight difference”? π
Prime Minister Aziz has worked hard to become a Financial wiz.
Good for him.
He has been voted as such by fellow professionals in an international body.
What vote? Mr.Pakistan? π
Why is this so hard and painfull to accept?
Nice dodge. Why is it hard for you to accept that he was a money launderer, as printed in your own media?
Sridhar, good stuff.
It is impossible to wake up those who are pretending to be asleep. Even with the US aid and Pakistan’s GDP growth, it is not possible to PAF to buy 55 F-16s, associated weapons, 150 JF-17s, AWACS and other systems and still be able to fund another fighter purchase within the next decade. Unless of course, Pakistan is ready to plump in 50 to 60% of its budget on defence and is willing to take massive amounts of debts.
BTW, this is from a rabidly pro-government paper in Pakistan.

A bizzare economic growth
PRIME Minister Shaukat Aziz has said that the country has registered GDP growth rate of 8.35 per cent during the current fiscal year as against the target of 6.6 per cent. Addressing the Annual Plan Coordination Committee in Islamabad on Tuesday, he noted that the per capita income will also consequently rise to 700 dollars plus level. Pakistan will be in the top of five fastest growing economies of Asia this year, he said. The phenomenal GDP growth rate of 8.35 per cent and increase in the per capita income to 700 dollars has been attributed by the Prime Minister to 7.5 per cent growth in agriculture, 15.4 per cent in large-scale manufacturing and 7.9 per cent in the services sector as well as to the continuity and consistency of policies during the last six years. Itβs reportedly the fifth time in Pakistanβs history that it has been able to achieve this level of GDP growth. Interestingly, the announcement of 8.35 per cent growth was not substantiated by the official data circulated at the meeting. The projected GDP growth is seemingly as bizarre as was the official claims of poverty alleviation. The economy related figures in our country have invariably been doctored.
AAS,
Did your govt claim 7% growth over the last 5 years? They did not. So where does the number come from beta?
BTW, about Shortcut Aziz here is a Pakistani expert
To end this piece, it is fair to say that the ex-private banker and current Prime Minister knows better than anyone how to get money in and out of Pakistan without documenting it since in his past life his job was to help people stash their cash.
Mr. Aziz’s speciality at Citibank was to launder money for Saudi Prince Al waleed bin-Talal. Anyone who knows Citibank knows that.
Vikraal i think you’ll find it’s common practice for all militaries to purchase foreign items on a credit/long term finance basis. Even the mighty India operates on such a basis.
I think any enhanced co-operation between the RN and PN is excellent.
Aziz
By that logic any country can buy any number any type of weapon system, right? π
Aziz,
Even my nephew has some “funds available.” But will it still be available after he buys his candy?
When you post numbers why don’t you list what is in the pipleline and how much will be needed to cover that and as a result how much will be left over?
Let me help you out with some paper napkin calculations:
Pakistan’s defence budget for 2004-05 is approx US $3.2 billion.
US Baksheesh = $300 million per year
Pentagon reimbursement assuming a favorable profit margin for Pak = $0.7 billion approx per year
Total = $ 4.2 billion
————-
55 F-16s package = approx $3.4 billion
AEW = $2 billion minimum
P-3C deal = $1.2 billion
Harpoons = $0.18 billion
I guess there is enough room to buy more…
PS: BTW you do realize that Shortcut Aziz, your PM, increased the GDP in 2004 by changing the base year, don’t you?

Vikas,
I’ve given up addressing your puerile questions which focus on trivialities rather than the substance of my posts. Two last points:
1. Even a man undergoing bankruptcy proceedings receives offers for big screen tv loans in the mail.
2. I did not say anything about the Pak economy lasting, just about the “baksheesh economy,” meaning buying things based on other people’s money being given to you. I just said that you cannot keep buying things assuming you’ll get free aid in the future. Responsible countries budget based on their projections of growth and not what lottery they might win.
You’re back to my ignore list. I should not have wasted the effort to read your pathetic post.
