I use mineral hydraulic oil (OM15/DTD585) for easing things. Will give the ATF a try though as it has a high dopes content. ATF is also good for flushing piston engines out. Add a small amount to the engine oil (1/2-1 ltr) run it up to a good temperature, then drain.

Usual flushing procedure is to dump in a quart of ATF & let the engine idle for 20 minutes. If the engine is full of sludge you will end up with a drainpan full of what looks like black blancmange…

WD-40 wasn’t designed to free rusted parts; it was an anti-corrosion product hence its name Water Displacement-40(th formula).

It is primarily a mix of petroleum products so diesel diluted with a little petrol will probably be just as good as a penetrating oil.

It’s mostly Stoddard solvent

Kroil is the absolute dogs danglies, but it’s not sold in the UK..unless.. (assuming there are any left) a gun shop carries it as it’s popular among gun owners.

I think that the very last job I did in the RAF was to sit at the end of the runway with Stu Hall and a test box and checked the IFF’s of those first six a/c away. Then I left the RAF on terminal leave and drove out of the gates forever. Many friends and colleagues were on the “Conveyer”

I sat on the cliffs near Plymouth one day & watched then doing “touch & goes” on the ramp/door at the stern of the Conveyor.

You sound like you’re in a better position to know about aircraft maintenance than me tbh.

I only work on a couple of diesels, everything else is recip 🙂

You don’t live in England then, as the big ones don’t start till the middle of May.

I see a lot of paper pushing & mention of the 14/28 day service. What’s involved in that exactly? Also a lot of *setting up* is talked about.
My comment about getting paid to do the work before actually doing it meant that the aircraft is servicable before the bills get paid. I just got paid this past Saturday for some work I did back in October… but the aircraft is ready to rock & roll.

Yes, they have the time all ******** up over here, apparently in the US Summer actually begins on Mid-Summers day…

& back on topic:
Saw the worlds oldest flying Lear yesterday. It taxied past, went aloft, returned & taxied past again.

I can’t believe no one spotted that the G meter in the other one my kid is sat in is actually secured to the panel with duct tape LOL!

How exactly were ‘this useless bloody shower’ as you eloquently put it going to start the winter service before funds were available?

Only now, can they afford to start the work. If they’d had the money it would have probably started ages ago.

Boy, I wish I got paid to work on aircraft before I did any actual work 🙂

As for June being the middle of the display season! Err, reality check.

First big airshow here was yesterday… minor ones have been going on for the past 3 or 4 weeks..

June at the earliest? So basically the middle of the display season, at least that will cut down on operating costs for the *year*

Is this useless bloody shower EVER going to pay the mechs etc to start the Winter maint program before Summer??

At least the ones I work on are ready to go now, in fact the F7F will probably get the cobwebs blown out this weekend.

Just received a pic of my granddad & the rest of the 4th Batt, Essex Regt on the parade ground in 1919….

He’s possibly with the group on the far right as he was a bugler & drummer.

Step dad was RN on the Protector & Eagle, not sure about others. So he’s more Navy oriented than RAF.. although he was with some airy fairy sqdrn on the Eagle.
