I actually work in an MC-130 squadron, and as of right now there are three variants in service.
The first is the MC-130E (aka Combat Talon I) which is now only in service with the Reserves.
The second is the newer MC-130H (aka Combat Talon II) which is in service with active-duty units.
The third is the MC-130W which is the newest variant which is only in use by one active-duty unit.
The fourth is the MC-130P (aka Combat Shadow).
The MC-130E/H/W’s primary mission is infiltration and exfiltration as well as resupply of special forces troops behind enemy lines. They can be used for STOL operations in forward areas or air drop supply. Troops can also do static or free-fall drops. There are also refuelling pods under the wings to refuel MH-60, MH-53, and various Army helos in flight. The aircraft are fitted with fairly extensive defensive suites consisting of both jammers and countermeasures. Systems like LIRCM and DIRCM are fitted to deal with laser and IR threats. Ironically, the oldest variant the MC-130E has the most extensive defensive suite and has a larger crew complement as a result.
The E/H variants also have a nose mounted terrain following radar. The W variant does not have this fitted as this time, and unlike the E/H variants, has a normal looking C-130 nose profile.
The MC-130P is primarily used as a helicopter refueller, although it can do some supply and troop carrying missions. It’s defensive suite is not as advanced as what is found on the MC-130E/H/W variants. It also lacks the dual rail cargo loading system which allows for air drops of various cargos at higher airspeeds. The rear fuselage must also be strengthened for this as well, and the P variant doesn’t have this strengthening.
thanx, great to know one working in active squadron:rolleyes:
