I’m not very sentimental when it comes to metal but looking at those ingots. It’s as if someone killed those aircraft. Such a contrast from what they were.
But then if someone wanted them they wouldn’t be in that state. Can’t save em all I guess.

No, someone wanted at least one of them. She was determined to complete her “art” project.

As our Scouts have just missed out on one Shackleton that we had hoped to become custodians of, and had not just spent our money I’d also have sent a PM. As is I will watch where she goes with interest! If anyone needs a place to store and restore her in Norfolk, though, we’d be glad to help!

Right, well, having seen things like this before – before it ends up in a skip under the excuse that there was nowhere for it to go I would like to make a public offer of undercover storage for the remains of N3378.

Always annoying when “heritage” organisations throw away things that other groups would take on…

Moggy, that depends if you can remember seeing Lightnings charging along it (or ever read the book ‘Thunder and Lightnings’). Sadly I would almost bet my house that if the runway goes, the field will be lost. Also, a hard surface runway is a bit more use for non-GA aircraft businesses.

Norfolk CC have replied that they are still totally open to suggestions – so the runway may not be lost if enough interest is expressed. One can only hope, anyway.

I would say quite categorically we would not be intending to build a flying replica. The intention would be to build as close a replica as possible of the fuselage and empennage for engineering practice, ground instruction and historical interest only. Think of it as a film prop aircraft (without a film).

The Scouts (Seniors and Rovers) would hopefully be doing much of the build, working with our neighbours who are a timber fabrication company (which could be just a bit useful) and emplying agricultural parts as we don’t have to be concerned about airworthiness.

In the past I always found it a very welcoming airfield (and the resurfaced main was smooth as a baby’s posterior). I’m glad to hear that the impression I gained last year may have been a false one – but I’m sure that you can see where it came from.

If there still any gliding going on, as there seemed to be a slight lack of them when I was last there and the gliding site seems to have gone (although that may just be me)?

Oh yes, I did forget Old Buck and Seething. Rats!

Shipdham was a lovely, friendly airfield but, as Bruce says, driving down a rutted peri track, then right through a large dairy unit (last few times complete with liquid cattle slurry all over the track) is not really a great access route.

The airfield sits directly beside the approach for Norwich and last time I was there (and saw anybody to talk to) they were concerned about the effects of the controlled airspace proposal. If that has been solved, fantastic. Sadly I can’t say as out of the last three times I attempted to visit the airfield it was closed twice (and on the third I was verbally attacked by someone “in case I was a thief” – who then walked away (actually stormed off while I was still replying) once he found that I was not leading me to assume that it was no longer open to the public).

    This was my suggestion:

Thank you for inviting alternative suggestions for the future of the former RAF Coltishall site. As you know, this is a very important RAF station in terms of it having been the longest serving fighter command station, having defended the people of Norfolk through WW2 and the Cold War era.

The heritage of the site deserves to be protected. I believe that the Jaguar simulator still exists on site and this, along with the control tower, could form the basis of an excellent museum based on the history of Coltishall and the contribution Norfolk made to air defence and offence – currently often overlooked in favour of Lincolnshire where the council are working to develop their own centre at RAF Scampton.

Parts of the site could be used for agriculture and/or solar power generation – but I strongly suggest that the main runway is retained. Aside from the historical reasoning that an airbase without a runway is always incomplete, I believe that the Council could make short and long-term revenue from this facility.

Norwich Airport is increasingly busy, and the General Aviation side of the operation is gradually being squeezed out. In the county there are only two main airfields, Tibenham (devoted mostly to gliding) and Shipdham (unlicensed, trapped in a dairy farm and conflicted with Norwich ATC). Encouraging the GA operations to relocate to Coltishall, paying rent and landing fees to Norfolk County Council, would bring in a steady income.

I am also aware that the air cadet gliding facility at Watton is threatened, and the option of encouraging them to relocate to Coltishall could be investigated.

Currently a number of airliners are stored at Norwich Airport. If the NDR is built the location used for this storage will be lost. Coltishall, with a long runway and decent site security, could be a viable alternative – with the fees for the storage of these aircraft going into the Council coffers. One or more hangars could also be offered for lease by aircraft engineering companies, such as the one outbid by NCC, bringing extra income and jobs into the area. Being an isolated location, Coltishall would be ideal for this type of operation.

Investigation could also be made into whether the Norfolk and Norwich Aviation Museum could be relocated to Coltishall, as their current site is also threatened by the NDR. This would be a challenging operation due the size of some of the aircraft, but is possible as demonstrated by the removal of an airliner from Norwich to Flixton as an airborne under-slung load. Access to Coltishall would be easier and safer than reaching the current site, and would draw additional visitors into the North Walsham area, which currently has few attractions.

The runway would also be available as an emergency diversion facility for Norwich International should an incident take place.

In short, I see the runway as the most valuable asset on the site and strongly encourage Norfolk County Council to follow Lincolnshire’s lead and develop a premier GA aviation centre for the County.

Thanks for those – they are a step forward from what I have. Due to the Scouting history of the type I still really hope to build a DH6. The fact that the type seems to have been “lost” just makes me more interested!

I mean, to quote Jeremy Clarkson, how hard can it be?!!!

A shame that the aircraft recovered, including this one, got scrapped. Still, makes you wonder what else might be hiding down there…waiting for more enlightened times?

I can see how the wooden replicas would be a challenge, and agree that EK would be a good call. I wonder how much it would cost to rent one of the surviving old buildings at Mousehold (assuming any were suitable)? Be nice to see the BP Museum restored to life there. Well, it’s a nice dream that Norwich’s aviation heritage would be remembered! 😉

Good luck with keeping the Overstrand mobile.

Pity HMS Plymouth was not moored with Belfast to remember veterans of later wars and to allow comparisons between the two to be made. Shame that she is going to go fro scrap instead.

I know we can’t save them all, but…:(

With it being named after a Norfolk village, and dating from the time when Boulton & Paul built aircraft at Norwich, it seems a shame that it could end up festering in a locked store when it could possibly go on display at the City Of Norwich Aviation museum, based at the airfield that replaced the one where the originals were built. Being honest, CNAM would be a very appropriate location for the whole collection (if they could fit them in) considering the history of the company.
