Typhoon = Dogfighter with bombs stuck on.. might be selling it a bit short considering she has only just got clearance for A2G and hasn’t reached full potential yet so it may be better to ask this question in 10 years, however for a swing role sortie what would you want in your inventory…

I’d have nuked them years ago. Not big nukes, just Hiroshima sized.

i always knew WE.177A still had a valid role!!!

So, what really is the ideal Medium Carrier?

The conventional nuclear powered Charles de Gaulle or the Ski Jump equipped IAC’s? Maybe something totally different???

one that can be constructed quickly, to spec and within budget without any major problems…

In the likely absense of this qualities PA.2 would be closer to the mark (quite liked project Julliette myself but that was killed a few years ago… that said PA.2 is likely to be killed off too![considering the fact that PA.2’s nearly €1bn over budget and looks like it will reach and surpass this figure] unless delayed until the CdeG is nearly 30.. by which time it will be the replacement)

background. The late Mr Powell was the youngest ever Professor and only one of two men to rise from private to Brigadier general. fluent in several languages including Urdu & Hindi & considered by the Indian natives to be of their ruling casts. Hardly the racist as branded by the liberal/communist press.
My reference to the deceased gentleman was merely to point out that he was one of if not the best debater in the lower house, having never lost in verbal confrontations in chambers. a true war horse.
however back to the point CVA-01.
money: Defence spending should never have been permitted to fall below 8%.
Quote Enoch 1943, “Britain should not dread all europe united against her.” The English channel/ North Sea / Atlantic Ocean are our first line of defence. Water. Water warfare is the realm of the Navy. Why keep tens of thousands of soldiers, airmen & their equipment on the european main land which is expensive. Was it King Henry who raised the Royal Navy before Cromwell raised the new model army?
    5 carrier battle-groups minimum.
    1 north atlantic. 9 buccaneers, 12 P1154″sea harriers”FRS, 9 seaking ASW 5 HS139 ASW & 3 HS139 AEW.
    1 round the world cruise, 9 buccaneers, 9 vickers 583 FGR, 5 seaking ASW, RM air-group 1154’s & 4 HS141 V/STOL transports???
    ! carrier in GB 72hrs stand-by, 1 at one month stand-by/training & 1 in refit.
stand-by groups with a squadrons of vickers, buccaneers, “sea harriers” HS139 etc depending on the threat.
    Strong leadership= strong navy=safe homeland.

    Rule Britannia.

8% really wasn’t managable in the economic problems of the 1970’s(which if powell hadn’t been sacked would have been his golden age)

5 fleet carriers would provide about 800 days at sea per year which would be 2 operational all the time and a third some of the time

round the world? Enoch advocated a withdrawal of east of suez so that wouldn’t have happened under a powell regime, we dont need 4 carriers to defend the UK/patrol the north atlantic (especially given his views on Russia/SU)

back to the argument of 5 carriers, powell obviously favoured a lean economy highly capitalist and low taxation and was blatantly not an advocate of power projection and only of adequete self defence so even without the problems of the 70’s spending wouldn’t have been 8%

HS.141, beautiful airliner(if you dont look at it from above or below) wouldn’t have made it onto a carrier and with a range of 500miles i doubt it would have made it wouldn’t have made it onto anything.

1154’s AND 583’s? bit much for UK naval aviation
