What annoys me more than the fact he wasn’t allowed in is that it is only the far right that are treated in this way, the equally far left don’t get the same and it highlights the fear of the far right at the moment, not very good PR by HMGOV.

Or included Carrier launch in Typhoon to start with.

then you create an alternative universe whereby the French may not even pull out of EFA

    Theres too many attractive jets
SHar FRS.1 especially in the RN metalic blue and white livery
Bucc looked an absolute pig on the deck but 25ft off the deck it was something else!
I quite like the look of Gripen but the solitary engine makes it look very twiggy towards the **** end.

    Jets that aren’t so appealing
Almost any US production jet since the 50s; Not that they are necessarily ugly, most don’t look bad at all but none of them have any character! (the ones that did never made it through (McDonnell Douglas/BAe JSF proposal, F-117N[pure fantasy anyway but that’s not the point], YF-17 had something that dissapeared by the time F/A-18A came about, YF-23 to name but a few).
However they’re beaten into 3rd place by the Flogger and Finback.

Here is another thing i read about the type 23 frigate. On Wiki it said that the cost of the ASW Merlin helicopter was £97 million! i don’t know how this figure was got to. Maybe the program cost divided by 44? seemed very high to me i thought the cost was under £50 million. Maybe it was was meant to be $97 million instead of pounds. Anyone have any info on the merlin. I think it is an outstanding helicopter in both variants but we need much more of them and if cost is the limiting factor i would rather have a split force of merlins for heavy duty top end work and a second cheaper helicopter for other roles to make up numbers. How much is a NH-90? Looking at AW products only thing i can see for commando Sea king replacements would be AW149 and even that’s a bit on the small side. The RN will need i guess around another 20-30 merlins to have them being the sole ASW operating from all ships.

That figure is worked out from the overall project costs, in the same respect Flynx costs £30m/unit and Typhoon costs £90m/unit (obviously they don’t but the press have a habbit of making things as seem 3 times as worse as they actually are)

Yip the F-35 and American Systems will be available, remember Kumar is oil rich and the American’s like their oil:D

so are Saudi, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait etc. but I cant see any of them on the guest list to the F-35 shop.

It’s not easy at ALL; i thought i might play around and see what i can get but it’s like being a child in a sweet shop. I can’t even decide between T45 and De Zeven Provincën, Fridtjof nansen seems attractive but i don’t have unit costs, only whole project costs (£2.0bn/5) ontop of that the sensor fit and propulsion system don’t really appeal to me.

I just dont like the Type 45 that much and at £1 bill a ship they are too much for my budget. Any chance I could put the RIM-162 Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile in the Aster – or I’ll just swap out the Aster 50 for Mk 41

Also i switched the budget to 18bill

£600m/ship really… and i would wager that F100 is cheaper to build too

(or are we taking into account R&D, etc here?)

OK…. that sentence just made my Friday morning.

People in the office are looking at me whilst I chuckle in a slightly demented fashion.

i’d only just recovered from a rather juvenille laughing fit at sexport when i read that.

“Antelope is also an old name IIRC).”

And you do this from Wiki:

“Twelve ships of the Royal Navy have been named HMS Antelope, after the Antelope:

HMS Antelope was a galleon carrying between 38 and 44 guns. She was launched in 1546, rebuilt twice and was burned by parliamentarian sailors at Hellevoetsluis in 1649.
HMS Antelope was a 56-gun third rate great frigate launched in 1651 and wrecked in 1652.
HMS Antelope was a 40-gun fourth rate frigate launched in 1653 as Preston and renamed in 1660. She was sold in 1693.
HMS Antelope was a 54-gun fourth rate launched in 1703. She was rebuilt in 1741 and was sold in 1783.
HMS Antelope was a 14-gun sloop purchased in 1784, and lost in a hurricane later that year.
HMS Antelope was a 14-gun brig launched in 1793 and sold after 1830.
HMS Antelope was a 50-gun fourth rate launched in 1802. She was used as a troopship from 1818, was placed on harbour service from 1824 and was broken up in 1845.
HMS Antelope was a 14-gun schooner, the ex-Spanish prize Firefly. She was purchased in 1808 and broken up in 1814.
HMS Antelope was an iron paddle sloop launched in 1846 and sold in 1883.
HMS Antelope was an Alarm-class torpedo gunboat launched in 1893. She was used for harbour service from 1910 and was sold in 1919.
HMS Antelope was an A-class destroyer launched in 1929 and sold in 1946.
HMS Antelope was a Type 21 frigate launched in 1972 and bombed and sunk in the Falklands War in 1982. “

If wiki is to be trusted (i don’t like using it, although i will double check my notes against it if i find they are wrong) then Antelope is a fitting name for nothing but a Corvette/Frigate

Audacious, Astute & Artful go well together, & Adamant, Active, Adept, Acute, Adroit, Alert, & Ardent would be perfect for the rest of a class of 10. All old ship names, & some are former submarines. Ambush doesn’t really fit in, except for having been an Amphion-class sub.

I’d particularly like to see Ardent re-used. It has a long history in the RN, & I remember 1982 . The last First Sea Lord might also like to see his old ships name carry on, unless he prefers not to be reminded of the ship he lost.

Now, that raises a valid point, i had forgotton about T21 names, I’ve no quarrel with Ardent although i dont like Antelope as a name but it would be fitting to reuse both on the same class. (this said the pic of Antelopes magazine blowing is one of the more famous pictures of the war, Antelope is also an old name IIRC).

I might be wrong, I read somewhere that the 97 review initially outlined 12 and that it has been revised downwards ever since to meet budgets.

If we get less than 7 then serious changes to Naval doctrine will be needed in the upcoming SDR. But Labour have effectively committed to 7, the Tories may try to wriggle out but i’m praying they aren’t quite as stupid as they come across in defence matters.

call-me-daves aren’t going to remedy the problem with defence, if anything they’ll continue down the course the UK are heading to atm

I’m certain that even with the govt. pinching pennies especially from the RN, we will see 7 orerdered. I’d like to see 8 but they have the excuse that they can’t fit itmin before SSBN work begins.

If it was up to me i’d expand capability at Barrow and order 12 like the SDR said we needed. Create quite a few more jobs too.

I thought SDR outlined the requirement for 10 although i may be wrong

I am hoping for a second batch with a lot of improvements to be ordered as well sometime in the future. Maybe so many improvements it could be a different class. Guess we will have to wait and see. Any hopes for one of the new batch getting called HMS Ark Royal?

i would like to see Amphion, Atremis and Apollo but who knows!

That has been delayed. And based on what was said when it was, I think that the cheaper alternatives being considered mean that a foreign yard might be used. I heard south Korea being thrown around. It would make for a cheaper ship for sure.

Lol and that replacement is years away yet. Ocean is only 19 years old. Compared to the Invincible class, it is barely out of nappies.

Too true, even though they are in urgent need of replacement. The Tankers were supposed to be out by 2010 by law.

Ocean is 11 not 19 IIRC (i’m adamant that it’s ’98 although i cba to check notes, also remember the plan for ocean was for a 20 year service life, thats 2018… although ocean could probably soldier on to about 2026.. also Ocean needs to be replaced by a class of 2 (RN needs 4 aviation capable vessels

Those are great images. Some of the shots even looked real, a pity they couldn’t work up a few of CVA-01, I’d love to see what that would have looked like in the flesh so to speak. I do have a question though, what are those displays on the islands? They look like the electronic timetables you get in railway and some bus stations?
