#1 is a Ramped Craft Logistic (RCL) of the Royal Logistics Corps (RLC). An RLC RCL. The Norwegian flag was well spotted, but a red herring. I think they had it up as some sort of courtesy thing while we were on exercise in Norway, the RLC ensign was flying from the ensign staff right aft.
#2 Dutch LCVP – if Wanshan says it’s a MkIII, it’s a MkIII. Also in Norway. Not sure if these guys self-deployed or if they were carried up there, but they were operating without a Dutch mothership.
#3 was an entrant in the 2008 Fowey Regatta raft race, closely based on the naval vessel present at the regatta. I was hoping someone might try to ID what it was based on.
#4 Ja Worsley has said everything short of the actual type name. Bonus points for the ship it’s being carried in.
Does anybody have examples of a Chinook landing on an helicopter deck aft on a ship? I know about Chinooks landing on flattops, but haven’t seen any landing on a ship underway, with an aft flight deck before.
See attached photos of Chinook operations on RFA Argus (I did say BIG flight decks). The second photo shows a Chinook IVO of spot 1, forwardmost spot on the port side, ahead of the port aircraft lift. You can see the outlines of the lifts on deck, and by comparison to http://www.operations.mod.uk/telic/images/ops/argus_hr.jpg you can see how close spot 1 is to the superstructure. That photo was taken during joyride flights for the ship’s company, so they weren’t pushing the envelope on SHOLs.
Bay class LSDs can operate Chinook underway but I don’t have any photos and the flight deck is a looong way from the superstructure anyway.
Edit – Found this too: http://www.chinook-helicopter.com/chinook/Shipboard_Operations.html An interesting solution to fitting two on deck.
The SHOL’s of a Chinook are very very restrictive.
Are you referring to national SHOLs for a particular ship in a particular country? (I’m assuming that by “SHOL” we both mean relative wind conditions for launch/recovery/other for a particular aircraft type operating from a particular ship class). I don’t recall Chinook SHOLs being that narrow for the ships I’ve been on, admittedly ships with BIG flight decks. But it’s been a while since I played with a Chinook so maybe I just don’t remember.
HOSTACs would give a good indication of the minimum flight deck size for Chinook operations, if Chinook is on the list.
More, more, more. I am having a little fun with this one. 😉
No. 5 might be a Lekiu class frigate (or else the smaller cousin: a Nakhoda Ragam class corvette).
It’s a Nakhoda Ragam.
As for no. 4, the ship in the background seems an Invincible class carrier by the looks of it (port side, about abreast of the bridge). Otherwise at a loss (although I’m sure to go ‘Doh!’ when you finally reveal it!).
Well spotted on the Ark Royal, though it is starboard side.
Sharpen your boots to give yourself a good kicking. Same ship as #3 HNLMS Van Speijk, M class frigate.
It seems to have finally run out of steam, no guesses for pictures 4 & 5 from the last set. Is everyone on holiday?
Looks like an evolution of the BAE design seen earlier. The rear phalanx seems poorly sighted with a blind spot to port, a 76 which has to be a **** poor idea, CODAG and has lost the 23’s magazine lunched torpedos for some cheapo deck mounted idea.
Ah, crap, I was wondering what that gun was and I think you’ve got it.
Those aren’t torpedo tubes on deck, they are Outfit DLF decoy launchers as currently fitted to other RN units.
1. German Brandenburg class frigate?
2. Norwegian Hauk class patrol boat?
3. Dutch M-class frigate
Correct.
all the pictures you can post 😀 if you can that would be great
OK, I uploaded most of them to Photobucket: http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v255/Anixtu/Bay%20Class%20Building%20And%20Launch/
I’ve had another dig through my photos. These should be fairly easy. The following rounds, hopefully more challenging.
Ark Royal, but close enough.
I found that Flamant pic too. (With Tegernsee in the background).
Another round, the last one that I have ready to go.
The third one is a french Flamant class boat.
Correct! (I can’t find the bigger picture, but it’s Flamant, you can read the pennant number on the bridge roof).
any more pictures of the bay class from the day of its launch?
Lots! Anything in particular you are after? I’ve got Mounts Bay on the slip the day before, the launch (not very good from inside the yard), other bits of Cardigan in the sheds, a bit of Daring in the shed, and Cardigan the day her launch was scheduled but cancelled.
I was disappointed that no-one spotted Diligence’s consort, HMS Trenchant. (I know this wasn’t fair!)
