Did Sunderland flying boats have a vice mounted inside somewhere?
Seem to remember seeing a picture of one.
That would be an interesting one to collect.
When the BBMF ground crew got DJ to insert his finger into the Spitfire, getting covered in oil in the process. Was that one of those classic `new boy` stitch ups? Bit like going for a long wait 🙂
I think you are all wrong about the Reds being booring.
On the Sunday at Duxford there were ooos, ahhs and a round of applause from a crowd that probably doesn’t have the luxury of seeing them day in, day out.
When I watch them I see a safe, precision display by the RAF.
Shame on the rest of you.
Looking at the youtube footage that accident is weird?
In the 2nd picture the force of the wing hitting the ground is transmitted through to the fuselage. You can see the tail section bending at the logo. Goes to show just how strong the wings are that they didn’t just snap off.
I guess that (survivability) must be due to the low speed, light weight and `bendy` nature of a gliders construction. Like the crumple zone of a car.
Did they manage to repair the sea plane they landed on the runway?

I visited Reno in 1998. Flew from San Francisco and boy did that 737 climb! First time I’ve had contrails off the wing tips and a feeling of being squished in my seat.
Show was great with some very colourful Furies.
I also did the CAF Airshow and remember being surprised by a Uk based Nimrod being on show.
Shark infested custard.
Shark infested custard.
“Lockheed and programme officials have claimed that the days of traditional dogfighting are over”
Similar claims were made with the Phantom in Vietnam until pilot pressure put a gun back in the aircraft because they were missing kills in close in dog fighting.
The engine nozzles are at different settings and the explosion is exiting from only one tail pipe. Not sure what that means but it does look unusual. Perhaps an engine failure on one side.
Does make you realise just how quickly things can go bad.
Wasn’t there a film about this called Blue Ice?
Does the Harrier count as a cold war fighter?
I vote the Harrier as it’s British, nimble and proven in combat.
If the Harrier doesn’t count then I vote for the Phantom.
Those iconic cold war pictures of Phantoms intercepting Russian Bears.
