Once the Lancaster is made airworthy does that mean they will be unable to taxi her at events?
Or will the taxi events become flying events?

I observed the 2 minutes silence then went for a very nice day in Reading.
Afterwards I passed the large Lion in the park. A memorial to war dead in Afghanistan.
    The memorial is dated 1878 and 1880 ( https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=reading+lion+memorial+afghnistan&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&gws_rd=cr&ei=b7l_UsPTHIrW0QXqq4GIBA ).
Whatever your feelings as to what this soldier did the real folly is we are still wasting lives in wars we can do little to influence.

There is one question left unanswered.
Who in the military deemed it necessary to prosecute the Marine in the first place?
This case should have been delt with internally and if it was just `this is what happens in war` should have gone no further.

Well were do you stop, Czech’s shooting Germans as they bail out, even the article in Flypast or Aeroplane this month about the Stuka that was trying to force land at a UK airfield that was shot Down killing the crew who could no longer fight back and were simply trying to crash land… It’s a hard and often fuzzy line.

    I find these comparisons purile.
Shooting down a crippled aircraft is totally different to rounding up the crew, indeed rounding up the wounded crew and putting a bullet in the back of their heads.

We should treat the enemy with compassion even if they have no compassion for us.
It’s what separates us from them.

If the Marines had dispatched the enemy openly, cleanly I wouldn’t have an issue with what they did.
But the conversation between them shows a callousness I wouldn’t expect from a Royal Marine.
Trying to cover up what they did shows they acted outside of the accepted behavior of war.

The picture of the bombs in one of the replies shows drainpipe sized bombs.
    Are these photo flashes?

Are Allied bombs more dangerous than German. I don’t recall a British person being killed by an old wartime one?

Pilots were lucky. It can’t be easy getting out of a spinning aircraft.

Interesting thread and thanks for the replies.
So the winches are placed inside the aircraft and powered by a generator via the crew entrance. Never knew that.
I always thought the winches were integral to the aircraft.
Makes sense to use the trolley to winch up the heavier bombs. I doubt you could safely handle the swing on the cables.

Anyone have a detailed photo of the generator?

BTW I read somewhere that the bomb cradles were designed before the Lancaster and didn’t fit very well.

It’s an interesting thought to consider how we will be buying and selling in another 20/30 years, now that we can use our phone to make purchases.
I am sure you are right and we are beginning to see the demise of coinage and paper money.

Have you noticed how inconvenient real money has become. Having to find some coins for parking, or a few quid for a sandwich at work because they don’t take card.
I have to plan ahead or go out of my way to get real money. Virtual money is instant. The way to go in my opinion.
