    FN4A Bungees,

    Hi folks,

My theory about the bungees is that the gun pins are loose, so would be secured to stop them falling into the drum and then down into the aircraft works through the holes in the drum, causing goodness knows what damage. As Walter says, you can see the hoses are already fixed to the gun cradles, so why put a loop around something that can’t fall?

Well just to back-up my theory, I seem to remember a comment on the ‘Gun Turret Drill’ training film, when talking about the gun cocking tools, ”taking care not to drop the tools…….” Anyway, it’s only a theory, though it actually works, as I’ve proved when trial fitting my replica guns. I had to make the pins from scratch, but couldn’t replicate that off-centre ‘plunger’- I made four clevis type pins instead, only ‘turret-heads’ will know the difference!(Thankfully I’m probably the only one in N.Ireland)
That’s it for now chums, cheers

    FN bungees

    Hi Folks,

Well call me doubting Thomas if you like, but I’m not convinced! On the FN4a the hoses are so short that they aint goin anywhere when you release them from the guns- it’s not as if they can fall into the works, in fact they sit almost straight thanks to the outer copper sheath fitted to ours. Also bear in mind that various ad-hoc modifications were carried out at different airfields, so until I see it in black and white………..(Am I being a pain in the a*** or what?!)

Seriously though, good to see more info on this subject coming out, it’s what keeps the interest going for me anyway. I keep meaning to upload some pics. so maybe in a few days I’ll have a go at posting.

    All the best chums
    John

    FN4a Turret bungees

    Hi Walter and Mike!

Mike, Walter and I have been debating this subject for a while, and my theory was that the bungees were used to retain the rear retaining bolts on the gun brackets, to stop them falling into the floor drum during re-arming, so if you can solve that one, that’s another(probably the last) piece of the jig-saw!

By the way, on the ‘Ulster’ turret, there were no clips or rings on the existing firing hoses which would have suggested an attachment to the bungees, but I’m looking forward to any pics. which will prove the point!

All the best to you both,

    Cheers

    Hi again folks,

    F4F Wildcat rudder

    Hi again folks,

That’s certainly a lot of contacts to make a start with, many thanks and I’ll let you all know how I get on. You might also be interested to know that the FN4a turret that I’ve been working on is more or less complete now, just waiting to have the perspex moulded. The Belgian Royal Army museum have been kind enough to lend us their metal moulds, and as soon as we can pick them up, we’ll be tackling that last job asap(always leave the tricky jobs ’till
last!) If I can remember how to post jpegs I’ll let you see how we get on with that too.

    Many thanks again
    John

    UAS

    Hello

I urgently need to contact the chairman (or associate) of the Ulster Aviation Society. The numbers I have for UAS either go unanswered or wont except incoming calls.

    Phil Rhodes
    Hull – The North

    Hi Phil,
My name is John Blair of the UAS, what is the nature of your enquiry,?, haven’t figured out how to use the PM, i don’t log on very often, but I’ll try and help if I can.
    Cheers,
    John

Thats true but if they are made to never fire then that should be ok. Our FN5 has real ones fitted!

You don’t live in the UK my friend- new laws going through Parliament aim to make it an offence to own, manufacture, sell or buy replica weapons, and this may include aircraft weapons!

    John,

    How are they constructed?

    Regards,

    Hi Mike,
Main gun body is solid mahogany block core with sheet aluminium sides, brass bar for buffers, steel tubing for main barrels(inner and outer) various odds and ends for bullet guides. My favourite bits are the flash eliminators-stainless steel salt and pepper cellars(honest), and they are exactly the correct size and taper! No wonder dealers want big money for replicas, it has taken me ages to make these, but I reckon it’s worth it.

    Thanks Mike,

No, they’re not real Brownings, I made those with the help of some drawings from a most helpful chap in the MOD pattern room, as well as some detailed photos sent to me by a friend associated with the FNa in Brussels.
I’m glad you had to ask though
(only turret nerds like us would notice)!

    Cheers,

    Hi Elliot,

What size is that left hand one, and does it have four poppet studs attached? Might be FN4

Yes Mike, they are copper. The interrupter valve control ones are the originals, gun firing ones are replacements(even soldered the original part numbers back on, how sad is that?!!!)
Have taken new photos, will attempt to load the up t-morrow(Sunday)

    Hi Cees,

When completed, the turret will hopefully be put on display at our new(still secret!) museum location, but that’s a few hundred hours of work away yet!
I regularly correspond with some friends at the Belgian Royal Army Museum in Brussels- they intend to build a mock up rear section of a Whitley for their FN4a. Previously we (the Ulster Aviation Society) thought we had the only one, but now there are two!.All we need are two Whitleys to mount them on!

    Best wishes
    John

    Gun turrets

    Hi all,

Hope to take some photos of the FN4a at the week-end, so with any luck, something will appear in the next few days.

    Cheers,
    John
