What do you think is the best most innovative advancement in turret technology? Like Cees mentioned, the technology is very fascinating.
Gyro gun sights?
Automatic gun laying turret?
Ammo feed systems?
Electric or hydraulic power?
What do you think?
Hey Dave,
I drove by on the night of Oct 11 and they had just applied the brown to the top of the aircraft. Even though they had covered the windows with plastic you could still see a bit.
Don’t worry about pictures!
Nice work Alan,
My 121 project is also on hold at the moment until I complete the work on my workshop!
And finish the basement……..
Hi Peter,
That is a very good possibility, but there are a few components in the turret that has led us to believe that it was a wartime turret. The torque tube assembly securing the base of the elevation rams was cut on both sides of the rams and the motor was missing. Most of the GGS components were still fastened to the two inside vertical frames which were also removed, but sold with the turret.
Somebody needed some hydraulic parts?
Here’s a shot of our third FN121 turret taken out behind my grandpa’s drive shed. Just a few years before my time! It was the first turret my grandpa purchased and came from George Ventress’s farm near Brighton, Ontario.
(1 1/2 hrs east of Toronto)
George scrapped a number of aircraft using their parts in farm equipment after the war. This is my only guess as to why this turret was totally gutted of it’s mechanical parts.
A few more:
My father, brother and I having been working to restore three FN121 turrets and a FN16 trainer turret.
Most of the spares that I have located were found on Ebay and 90% were electrical and gunsight components that could possibly be found on a number of British turrets.
It seems to be extremely difficult to locate a part solely for one particular model of turret.
A few images of our FN121 and FN16 projects below:
(I apologize for any reposts)
Pictures as promised!
Regards,
Thanks for the update Dave!
I will try to get some shots this weekend before she is closed to the public.
I’ll be there the day after the dedication for sure!
I’m not sure, but I have seen some tutors on flatbeds over the years around Trenton.
I think that they would truck them all the way out to Moose Jaw for a complete tear down during the off season.
From what I understand, some aircraft have been a Snowbird a few times and others never.
Missed one……….
When the time comes these tutors will become Snowbird team aircraft.
A few more pictures of the Tutors and a CF-5 in storage at Mountainview.
Peter,
Did 177 make it to Nanton safely?
I hope so!
Regards,
