Construction of India’s first indigenous warship underway
Taking first strides towards complete indigenisation of India’s defence armoury, the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Kolkata have begun building country’s first completely indigenous warship.
“On August 12 Defence Secretary Shekhar Dutt cut the steel, thus paving way for the construction of the country’s first indigenously built anti-submarine warship with stealth technology,” GRSE Chairman and Managing Director Rear Admiral (retd) TS Ganeshan said.
“It is a 25,000 tonne corvette armed with stealth-mounted guns, the latest electronic warfare suite which, together with other key operational equipment, is shielded using stealth technology incorporated into the design of the bulwarks,” Admiral Ganeshan said.
Other signature management control features are built in to combat the ship’s infrared, radar-cross signature, noise and magnetic outputs. Electricity is supplied via four diesel generators; two independent interconnected switchboards optimise redundancy and reliability.
“The structure of the ship would be such that it would cut down noise drastically to prevent it from getting detected by enemy submarines. But it will be able to detect an enemy submarine from a distance and destroy it,” he said.
The cost has not yet been ascertained but GRSE aims to deliver the corvette to Navy by first half of 2009. It is also expecting more orders from the Navy, “which would materialise in a month’s time”, he said.
GRSE is executing orders valuing Rs 5000 crore. Last week, it presented a dividend of 40 per cent to the Defence Minister, he said.
Now the foreign navies are approaching the yard with their orders. Enquiries for frigates and Fast Attack Craft are coming from Sri Lanka, ASEAN members and few African countries.
“We are analysing their queries regarding how to meet the orders. We want to work on it. After completing our analysis, we have to bid for it in the global market and get the order,” Ganeshan said.
According to Admiral Superintendent Naval Dockyard Rear Admiral BK Kaul, this is the first step towards the Navy’s goal of attaining complete indigenisation within next 15 years.
“Successful completion of this project will end our dependency on the foreign suppliers, ease burden on the exchequer as it can save millions of rupees and make our industry globally competitive,” Admiral Kaul said.
“Already 75 per cent of the equipment fitted in the newly acquired ships are indigenously built,” he added.
there is type its 2500 tons not 25000 tons, anyway nice to see some opensource info on it after the force debacle. Not suprised it is 2500 tons similar to what i predicted 5 months back based on tender for grse.
isnt the displacement of uncompleted varyag 33k tons? or atleast thats what it was when it chinese bought it.
are you asking if its technically or politically feasible for oscar-ii to be convereted?
to answer the first probably if you have few hundred million to throw at a project it is feasbile but russia cant really afford to do that.
As for second one currently russian navy seems to be focused on procuring more surface combatants to make up for the ones being retired and maintaing its tactical strike capability i dont believe improving its land attack capability is a main priority right know.
Dude, the sourse of the seeker is militaty technology abd not your Battle space something. Its a very old issue and is not avaliable on net. I have given the required acknowledgement.
Well I hope you have understood what I want to tell you. India-Defence.com along with you remains banned in Frontier India.
I don’t want to indulge in your kiddie porn fantasies anymore…..
g’day
can some mod and plz go edit all the last few comments totally inapporpiate and pointless. anyway brute *sigh first of all quit promoting your site it has nothing to do with this place besides no one gives a damn and second of all if you have personal grudge with someone dont post it here take that crap else were.
it is part of russian mineral-me i already posted a image of what radar actually looks like and it was exactly similar to the image of 052c’s radar before the dome was installed.
According to Jane’s (either M&R or NI, forgot), the upgraded IN Mays will have the ability to launch Kh-35s. I am assuming 2 can be carried, one under each wing. The Kh-35s will also be the most likely ASM for the Mig-29Ks as well.
yeap along with upg ka-28’s as well however there is been no confirmation that kh-35 have been ordered separetly unless it was part of mig-29k package?
It is already fitted with two radars. The land based Tunguska has already been offered with a box type array radar and multiple target engagement capability. Compared to the radars fitted to the Kashtan, the radar fitted to the Kristantema is very small.
Fyi, for the Kashtan two radars one is a tracking radar the other is used for missile guidance.
As for palma it seems more or less dead especially because of Kashtan-EO and also upgrade kit for ak-630 is also being promoted. And besides most of palma’s advanced features such as improved 30 mm were incoporated into Kashtan-M.
Any comments??? Nothing on the speeds….

Chinese Cruise Missile Portfolio Expands
By Douglas Barrie and Robert Wall

it says its powered by turbojet so it should be subsonic and besides its appearance doesnt suggest its a supersonic missile.
Make more sense to be 300 miles. But MTCR pressed BAPL to say it is 300 km. Thanks Harry to make it clear with reliable info.
MTCR had little to do with its AsuW range being stated as 300 km that is its AsuW range, even earliar articles on yakhont/onyk all clearly stated that its range is around 280 km. What is at question is land attack range which being its secondary role will never be released for obvious reasons as is the case with other AshM similar to it.
Please stop with the wishful day dreams of what they may or may not disclose.. The range in the literature is the range it has unless and until they publish officially a higher range.
Hi hi? you mean like a balistic missile? Then why not just use a BALLISTIC MISSILE?
You could start by refraining from childish comments if you dont know squat for starters you dont seem to understand hi-lo flight path is when its flying at high altitude around 14-15km and then it moves to low altitude flight path around 5-20 m varies with source. Its just ramjet are fairly effective at high altitudes shipwreck also had hi-lo flight path.
extra 700km? and where would they get a such a massive hike from?
depends mainly on the flight path and speed i doubt its true range will ever be released.
Have there been any estimates of how much the RCS of Brahmos has been reduced?
no idea but yakhont was supposed to have RAM treatment and anyways compared with moskit its diameter is smaller because of its intakes and its wings are relatively small as well. So its frontal rcs should be relatively small.
As for mig-29k and brahmos, it can carry supposedly but there no plans for it to carry it only the su-30mki and bear are only two being integrated to carry as per the press reports.
ASMP is a tactical weapon, as for US it has a few supersonic missiles under devolopment jsscm, hyfly etc.
They make it sound like the US is incapable of fielding a supersonic missile when the reality is it was a concious decision. Compare it to the Tomahawk mentioned in the article. How big of a warhead does a Brahmos carry for how far and how large is the missile? Can it carry a one thousand pound warhead over 600 miles and can you carry up to 122 of them on a cruiser or 20 of them in a bomber? Different goals. The US had a kerosene fueled ramjet powered missile operational nearly half a century ago in the Talos (used today as the Vandal target drone). In fact, change the wing shape a bit and what does it look like?
Comparison with tomahawk is not a very knowledge one by the article since they are in two different class but not suprising considering it is news article, former is purely for land attack purpose were as latter is ashm with secondary land attack capability similar in a sense to NSM, Exocet blk 3.
As for yakhont’s engine it is quite simple and similar design is used by few other russian missiles, if it works dont try to fix it. As for talos looking like brahmos only thing it has in common is the nose everything is different including the solid booster.
1 ) How easy or difficult would it be to integrate the KLUB missile with the Scorpene considering that Klub could be fired from 533mm TT , also Klub being the standard for IN Kilo class subs.
not very easily because for starters the tubes must be able accomadate a missile of that size length and weightwise not to mention missile has to integrated with scorpene’s SUBTICS.
2 ) What is the status of Exocet Block 3 , Is a sub launched variant of Exocet
Block 3 being developed , How does the new Block 3 compared to Klub ??
under devolopment testing next year, but there are no plans for a sub launch variant. As for comparison with klub its lot more compact than klub but its subsonic, MM40 blk 3 does have secondary land attack capability probably in similar manner as brahmos.
As for the article dont think this statement is correct:
Whitehead Alenia Sistemi Subacqua’s (WASS) BlackShark/IF21 (already ordered by Pakistan and Malaysia for their Agosta 90B and Scorpene SSKs), A184 and F17 Mod 2 family of torpedoes;
Pakistan never acquired Blackshark are atleast to my knowledge only F17 Mod 2s accrding to sipri.Accordin to janes 2002 article only chile and italy operate/ordered it france and greece had shown intrest.
proquest article does not mean that is credible.
use ur head.
how can Pak started construction of 3rd submarine before it even receive the first one from France? First u have to built infrastructure for submarine building than Train crews for that on first and second submarine than u can start ur own 3rdsubmarine.. but i dont think this simple logic can be put ur head. just like ur banging on F-22P armament from unofficial sources when later BABUR was shown.
lmao proquest not credible , as i said if you dont think that credible look jane’s fighting ships i am pretty sure it says 1997 there as well. Anyway what has f-22p have to do with this and besides that info was from kanwa if i recall correctly which you guys say is credible when it comes to any other info. Anyway i am pretty sure you are posting just to start flame war. If you have any evidence to back your claim post it, otherwise dont come with BS statements and waste my time along with others.
