While I agree SRL Shtil is likely on the new Talwars, I’m not convinced by this reasoning. How then do you explain the 2×12 VL Shtil outfit planned for P15A, replacing the 24 missile SRL Shtil outfit on the P15?

No one has so far confirmed Vl-shtil for P-15A, and there is some confusion since the latest reports say Barak-8.

    > vl shil

surely because P17 has it. not sure if P15A will have it – probably yes because Barak8 agreement is in initial phase only.

where’d you hear P-17 has Vl-shtil, all models show shtil-1?

Of todays ships, The Horizon are ugly. The Talwar are impracticle and Type 45 are worse than the Horizon but nothing is as bad as the Arleigh Burke class!

Personally I like the F-100 Bazan class followed by the Nansen class!

whats wrong with talwar, burke and type 45?

Well seeing as Arabel is considered inferior to Sampson, it is quite possible. The gun arrangement is ridiculous, it dosnt allow for the future fitting of a large calibre gun, unlike the T-45 which could take one of the new 5 inchs or a 39 calibre 155mm.

They should have been fitted with Shorad Mistral system instead of the oto’s similar to the one’s fitted in Delta class FFG i guess it comes down to $$.

I wonder if fitting brahmos on talwar means adapting exsisting vls system for brahmos or fighting new VLS module.

they have added another weight saving measure buy buildint the hull out of Aluminimum thus there is basically no top weigth to speak of really.

The disadvantages of this metal in the design is that it offers lkittle to no resistance to any sort of weapons fire. This is also a reason there are no missiles aboard (the booster flame would melt a hole in the deck).

Didnt USS Stark have a aluminium superstructure, it survived a direct hit by a exocet did it not?

Some time back I had posted a news on M2K upgrade where MICA was mentioned , Ofcourse whats the point in going for a Dash-5 upgrade without its main AAm the MICA.

The Derby as BVR dosent take you any where its terribly short on Range , around ~ 30 Km compared to MICA’s 60 ~ 70 km

AFAIK The cost of the Homing head tends to be the most expensive part on the missile , costing as much as 60 percent of the entire missile electronics.

Hence the assumption that a ARH missile would be expensive than a command guided one is correct

I don’t know where you got the range for deby from its certainly greater than 30 km, as for dash-5 upgrade derby/python can be integrated into it then there is ofcourse Astra.

As for cost of the missile yes active seeker costs more than missile without one when you are comparing to similar missiles, but in the case of barak, trishul and derby/python there is factor of mass production which would make missiles relativly cheaper compared to the former two.

Eventually the MICA would make it when the M2K goes for a certain upgrade , Plus the new requirement for an outright purchase of 20 M2K-5 from France which is underway.

Thales article doesn’t mention mica will be procured, it shouldn’t be too hard to integrate derby/python onto upg M2ks.

Sypder is def. more expensive than the Trishul.. which uses a less expensive & capable Flycatcher radar, plus its missiles dont have seekers on them…they are basically guided darts…Trishul was meant to provide an inexpensive but capable Short range defence..which if they get all that guidance sorted out..it should be, to build up numbers. Rafael has also integrated Barak with Flycatcher for a very similar role, it too is acknowledged as a cheap (and somewhat less capable) alternative to the more expensive Spyder.

where’d you read barak costs less than spyder? i would expect it to be more expensive. Just because the missile is command guided doesn’t mean it will cheaper than active/ir guided missile from what i have seen python seems to cost less than barak. Also Command guided missile requires guidance radar and its performance is limited to intercepting a single target where as spyder can intercept as many targets tracking/search radar can handle.

Probably its cost– Mica would have been too expensive..

From what i understand both were offering a similar package for 300 million. MBDA was also hoping to sell MICA for IAF and IAF would have acquired some with UAE’s Mirage-2000. That deal fell apart which probably had some impact in IAF choosing spyder. There was talk about python for the sukhois wonder if that will come true know.

Also, this implies Israel got clearance from the US…there were reports that (in Indian media) that implied that Python and Derby had US components…dont know how valid that is…perhaps our Israeli members can pass details…

Didnt Israel sell python to few nations like china?

I think Tirshul will remain as a cheap alternative to build up numbers…the Spyder is bound to be pretty expensive..

Hard to say how much spyder costs in relation to trishul, but compared to trishul there would be fewer needed since its VLS and has longer range. Also latter is mounted on trucks where as trishul requires guidance radar in its launch platform, ultimately it comes down to price of the missile.

why not use RIF-M mounted on VLS cells similar to the ones used for vl-shtil, back when they showed off designs for XXI Corvette one of the variants had this combined with smaller tombstone radar and yakhont mounted in vls cells.

Probably becouse the French have somewhat cleverly managed to design a sub that is better than the Scorpene that India is in the process of aquiring.
In fact the french have been very clever, exploiting the situation between two near third world countrys to sell 12 new submarines in a decade.

Pakistan gets Agosta’s so India gets Scorpenes so Pakistan gets Marlin, its whats called an arms race.

Scorpene is join venture the profit margin for france us low compared with what they can get with Marlin, also there is opposition to selling scorpene to pakistan from navantia (which is intent on selling more to India). Hence the Marlin, however since Marlin entirely new design and there is no other country procuring it unless DCN can convince them otherwise. The whole venture is very risky, IMO I don’t think even pakistan would procure them.

Last agosta is still under construction in karachi isn’t it not? Any launch dates yet?

Kind of amusing how that worked out seeing how they originally thought a Flanker could be produced in India for about half the price of one made in Russia.

does the word “inflation” mean anything to you? you do realise it will take till 2014+ for the last batch of flankers to roll out.

Jon, Palma is more than just alive, it has recently been fitted to a Tarantul III corvette in the black sea fleet (of course).
    There are pictures at a c i g. org

wow old thread 🙂 anyway i believe thats the test vessel, just because it was fitted onto test vessel doesn’t mean the system is alive. Remember the dual Ak-630?

It looks more like a copy or inspiration of Bandstand than a real Bandstand. I do have to add that this Bandstand like radar isn’t the only Chinese naval radar that can guide a YJ-8X missile. It may not look like Bandstand underneath after all, the only thing that resembles the Bandstand is the radome.

As for the VLS in front of the ship, I think it’s more S-300 cannisters.

it is bandstand or exactly identical to it, there was a photo of Chinese ddg under construction which had bandstand without the dome and i compared that with image of bandstand without the dome from the milparade brochure couple months back. I will try to find that post if anyone is intrested.

Edit: Did a search couldn’t find it.
