I think it’s great news, the 777 is a fantastic aircraft. It is a pilots dream from a flying point to the crew rest facilities.

Cathay will look at replacing the A340 over the coming years with the 787 or the A350 and maybe looking at the 747-8 or the A380 to replace the 744 which I feel will be converted into freighters.

Changing time ahead from Cathay during this time of great expansion.

Was chatting about various things systems and so forth, his comment was the only thing wrong with the 744 is that they made the fuel tanks to big as it gets a bit monotonous on a 14 hour sector.

    I agree, too long. 😀

with the state of the oil industry and high costs, two is going to be better than four engines in new aircraft.

    Who knows?

Maybe they’re discounted as much as all those Ryanair B737-800s, eh? 🙂

and maybe the same as those Easyjet airbuses. 😀

The reason we can switch on the lower beacon or both upper and lower beacons is that in visible moisture with the upper beacon on it can cause vertigo. Therefore being able to switch it off will reduce the affects of vertigo.

Air war heats up as Boeing stretches point

Airbus’s 550-seat ‘big idea’ has not won over all the major airlines, now its US rival prepares to enter fray. Clayton Hirst reports

Boeing is preparing to mount a head-on challenge to the Airbus A380, the world’s largest passenger jet, with plans for a stretched version of its 747.

The 450-seat jet, called the 747 Advanced, is still on the drawing board but the final decision on whether to put it into production will be made at a Boeing board meeting in the next few weeks.

Lew Platt, the chairman of Boeing, said: “The airlines we are talking to are pretty enthusiastic. Right now it looks like this is a programme that is gaining momentum.”

The 747 Advanced would be smaller than the 550-seat A380, but it would be Boeing’s largest passenger jet and would be marketed in direct competition to Airbus’s double-decker plane.

Documents seen by The Independent on Sunday in the UK show that Boeing is preparing to claim that the 747 Advanced would cost the typical airline 23 per cent less per trip to fly than the A380. Central to this saving is Boeing’s claim that the jet would consume 14 per cent less fuel per passenger compared to Airbus’s giant plane.

Boeing is also planning to kit out the front portion of the upper deck with “Sky Suites” with individual boudoirs for premium-paying passengers.

Over the last 35 years, Boeing has sold 1,350 of the 747s, making it the most popular commercial jet in history.

If Boeing decides to develop the 747 Advanced, it is expected to turn its attentions to British Airways and Cathay Pacific as its first potential customers, both of which have yet to back Airbus’s A380.

Now If I was in a 752 at FL470 doing its typical cruise speed of M.795 and set the EPR to 1.03 I’d be going down at a couple of thousand feet per minute!

    I would call that a stall……. 😀 😀 😀 😀

SC – More than happy to divulge next time we meet! Glad to hear that you havn’t had any finger trouble…but then your airline wasn’t one of them!

Thee beer is cold mate. I was surprised when you wrote regarding the finger trouble, and glad to hear it’s not been Cathay. The fuel system on the 744 is very simple and only requires us to press a couple of buttons when the computer tells us too. 😉

Are you in Honkers soon??????? 😀

Sorry Sandy but I can identify 3 separate cases of B744 fuel system ‘finger trouble’ this year alone, so I’d hardly say it works well and wouldn’t benefit from updating. Apologies for saying that lack of FCMC’s means downgrading to operating like a Boeing but that’s just how it is whether you like it or not.

Care too share the finger trouble problem with us as I have never seen any finger trouble with the 744 fuel system.

    Cheers. 😉

The point I was trying to make is that if Airbus aircraft were so bad why on earth is it the best selling manufacturer in the world?

Does that mean it is a better product, er no.

Ford make more cars than Rolls Royce, but Ford is not a better product.

OK, if Boeing and Airbus cost the same who do you think would sell more aircraft?????????????

    I would say Boeing.
