Does anyone know who actually owns the aircraft now? Who is doing the dismantling/scrapping of the aircraft? Would there be an opportunity to save the entire fuselage?
Well done Brooklands!
I just read on the Classic Air Force website that they have received a VC-10 last Wednesday! Great news, well done!
Any update on the RAFM situation? Will there be any other VC-10 preserved? I hope to see another one fly before their retirement.
Well that was the one over Coventry then!
I actually heard it was a VC-10 before I could see it, colleagues declared me ‘strange’ but hey.
So, will the RAF musuem have no VC-10 then? Or are they going to transport one in? What will happen to all the others at Bruntingthorpe? Any chance of keeping more then one on site?
Will Brize Norton keep one? Has onyone else shown an interst in preserving an airframe? Bristol Collection at Filton (lots of work on them)?
Would be nice to keep more then one! Great plane. Big thing as well for the UK, last proper British aircraft out of service.
When would be a good time to see one fly before retirement? Are flights announced?
Chris
Gentlemen,
Nobody says these museums are closing, maybe we should therefore not assume that they are.
Try to keep it drama free.
Enjoy the weather!
I remember the display at Duxford, it was really great. Just looked at the Ellis Park flyover again, that must have been great to be there that day.
RIP
Thank you for the update, I didn’t know the retirement had been put back, good news.
Regarding digging up the runway at Filton, surely that should not matter, after all these planes were supposed to be for short airfields!
Yes, there are several survivors already, but the ones at Brooklands and Duxford do show a lot of corrosion. The fact that non of them will likely go inside in the near future is somewhat worrying.
I hope to see one fly at a show later this year.
VC-10 retirement
Happy New Year!
With the retirement of the VC-10 early this year, what are the chances of a 3rd airframe being preserved? I know 1 is going to the RAFM at Cosford and one to Bruntingthorpe. Is there an opportunity to keep another one? Would Filton be interested, they did a lot of work on them there? How about the Bristol Aero Collection?
It is a significant plane for the UK.
Thank you for all the information!
Great plane!
Apart from one for the RAFM and one to be kept at Bruntingthorpe, any additional ones to be preserved?
This is a very significant plane for the UK, especially now that BAE systems and the government have said be ‘bye bye’ to any real Airbus/Civil aircraft involvement.
Significant and good looking!
The Nimrods were given away, are they going to do the same with the VC-10?
Any plans to keep one at Manchester? One should really be kept by the Science Museum, but I can’t see that happen.
Can I have one?
Did the Ulster group know about the Catalina?
Good stuff! There needs to be a Dakota museum.
Nonsense? Well if you say so.
So please explain to me why many area’s in the Midlands, the North West and the North East are having all these problems? Maybe because there is nothing to do? No jobs, no income?
There are many people who are in total denial about the loss of industry because it is shameful.
Brough/Cadderton/Woodford are the perfect example why so much has gone, because they simply stopped developing products. What other country in the world would consider to still be building a 1950’s airliner (which had problems), with a modified wing in 2010? Where is the replacement Hawk? Nowhere! Everything has been milked to death.
There are a few surviving healthy companies (RR, JCB, Airbus Uk, etc.) but it is nothing compared to what was.
There is a huge service sector, a big financial sector, but that can not compensate for the mass employement and the healthy income from a large industry.
They did a survey to see what happened to the many staff at Rover in Longbridge after factory closure, many ended up with lower payed and lower skilled jobs.
Just look what happened to all the old aviation factories: Housing, storage, etc. How is that supposed to make money and provide employment?
Listing numbers and make it all look good on paper is one thing, reality is sometimes different.
The last few factories of this once mighty industrial nation are going!
Apart from the example for the RAF museum are there any other VC-10’s going to be preserved?
Are they currently retiring the Cargo versions and will the Tankers be the last to serve?
Would be great if another one could be saved!
