Up to a point. Fits the ‘British invention’ of the carrier scenario, but let’s not overlook that famously American engines go the other way to Brit ones, excepting the Griffon. I think it’s something to do with driving on the other side of the sky.
Mmmm, a bit of an urban myth. Prior to the Merlin going to sea, most British naval types had engines that turned the same way as their American equivalents…
…I think. 🙂
Thanks chaps.
Certainly the Ark Royal and Illustrious class had them – called ‘accelerators’ but the Ark at least had the cumbersome four point ‘trolley’ type unit.
Couragous and Glorious had them too.

My dad, who was in the army, once laughingly told me that the Dakota was the only plane that flapped its wings!
there was an old wartime joke that nobody ever worked out the wingspan of a Wellington as it flapped its wings too much to be able to measure it.
Have tried to find 460 sqn orb to see what is mentioned but it is no longer available on the naa website so dont know how i might be able to view it .
Its still there – or was five minutes ago. Look for
“Unit history of number 460 Squadron – January 1944 to October 1945”
Its a digitised copy.
The Ashton can be seen next to the Sperrin at 8:18.

Newsreel featuring returning crews:
Yep. Spot on Graham. The location is Lake Bardawill but the incident took place in 1956 during the Sinai War rather than in 1957.
Pakistan. Forced landing on beach after engine failure. Boats placed to protect it as the tide comes in?
