In terms of usable power, the late merlins in service were delivering as much clout as the sabre. The sabre no doubt could have been developed further, but the same could be said of the merlin.

The topic is covered in one of the R-R Heritage Trust publications.

I always thought Poland’s territory was pretty fixed until it was invaded.

No. Poland grabbed a part of Czechoslovakia following the Munich agreement.

Wouldn’t you need to put an elephant on the tailplane to keep the cg within acceptable limits?

I dont really see what the problem is. A few days from now we will have run out of subjects and it will be back to the dull world of Spitfires.

I think that these threads have been fascinating. Had they been outside of historic I would have missed them.

Quite frankly, I’m disappointed that the photographer of this shot sanctioned its use by the BNP

Its quite possibly a photo library shot. If so, the photographer is unlikely to have any say over who uses it.

And to keep Moggy happy, an Overstrand over the Tay if that bridge is anything to go by.

Definitely the Tay bridge. The photographer who took the photographs lived in St Andrews and was a regular visitor to Leuchars from roughly the 1930s to 1960s. His collection of negatives (Cowie Collection) is now owned by St. Andrews University and contains many fascinating images.

If you visit their online archive database, and use a keyword such as “leuchars” you should be able to find over a hundred of his images. There are more, but they have not been scanned yet.

Is there any way to ask the author of the piece where the photo came from?

Instead of sending it off to the US, phone up Monino and swap it for a Bear. That would be a pretty impressive cold war reminder. 😀
